If you look at local laws, you can see most politicians have tried or successfully banned most weapons decades ago, aside from guns which only have heald on because of the 2nd amendment

If you pay close attention to state laws, this is actually a really fucking common thing.

Since people generally only give a fuck about and pay attention to firearms, state legislators in even hardcore progun states will slip in all sorts of bans and legislation for pretty much anything that isn't a gun. Seriously, in a lot of states you can open carry an AR, but there will be some autistic law about carrying pepper spray, switchblades, or even fucking ninja stars or something. Ostensibly, I've heard that this is because "such and such weapon 'does more damage' than a gun", or "these weapons aren't regulated like firearms are so we need to ban them out right", but in all actuality it's just legislators stripping away what little bits of your freedom they can because they know they can get away with it.
