I don't think you can argue that the south weren't rebels or traitors but you can certainly argue that they had valid reasons for their secession. Supporting either side is irrelevant at this point. The confederacy is dead. The Union ran a slash and burn campaign that would cripple the southern economy and kill thousands of civilians. The southern decision to Secede was short sighted and stupid but that doesn't absolve the union war crimes.
