All it did was allow the Taliban to more openly claim territory they essentially controlled anyway, and seize some more that they previously owned. Which is good because no solution is going to happen without an agreement between the Taliban and Government, instead of everyone pretending that the Taliban was just some small underground group of terrorists rather then the large tribal linked state player that it is.

you misread I was using him as an example of the kind of thinking that has made Afghanistan such a waste of time, ie the thinking that the Taliban is a small hardcore terrorist group that is somehow separate from a large part of the population.
Also the Taliban have toned down quite a bit on the fundamentalism in order to win hearts and minds which is probably one of the only good things to come from the conflict.

The 1,500 would be the full-time leadership cadre. The bulk of the fighting force is a part-time militia mobilized locally where needed from the allied villages and tribes.

The Taliban have full time governors, tax collectors, police/local security, IED makers, active fighters ready to fight enemy incursions at any time, man checkpoints, lead offensives and carry out patrols, leadership and logistic personal, propaganda producers etc, etc. The fact you think theyre doing all this and holding down a number of districts with millions of people living in them under constant enemy pressure and frequent leadership assassinations, attrition of fighters/personal in combat and army operations, as well as maintaining constant pressure on contested districts with what amounts to the number of people in a large highschool, working full time is whats laughable.
I understand most fighters are part time and supplement there wages during harvesting seasons etc. But it takes far more then 1500 on the books full time to maintain and expand what the Taliban posses, unless that 1500 is a bunch of immortal, spartan demi-gods of some sort.
