Yeah sure it's main purpose is to be a reproduction so it's a bit outdated, lacking a rail etc. but it really does make up for it in looks and as long as they managed to make the gas system properly this thing would still make for a nice little carbine even today.

They kind of didn't, and that's kind of the point of the thing. For legacy and history and whatnot, they make it with the gas system too long for the barrel length, just because that's an old mistake that used to be made. It works, and with extra low recoil, but there isn't much wiggle room to keep it reliable. It will take less grime or less unusual ammo to start having issues.
You can avoid these sensitivities without compromising the long old sights and the long old handguard. Just divorce the gas block from the sight, have a proper gas length for the barrel length, and hide it within the handguard. "Mock dissipator" is what some call that.

just enlarge the gas port, there's loads of wiggle room there
you do know that many a gun in the times of early semi autos literally siphoned has right off of the muzzle, cycling a gun does not require much gas
