Way too complex to manufacture on a large scale, miserable to fix if there was a malfunction, ended up using clips because magazines were hard to produce and had to be hand-fit. Along with the hindsight that it would rely on an ammunition supply that was limited.
There are other automatic rifles from WW1 and I'd argue that they were better.

To be fair, even the SVT had those issues. That's why the magazines cost nearly as much as the whole damn rifle.

One might be able to argue that the 6.5x50mm round is comparable to a modern intermediate round. That's only in resulting ballistics, the thought process of the Japanese at that time was that it was a full-sized and full-powered round because they only had rifle and pistol ammunition. The reputation of the 6.5 Japanese round being weakened was to reduce the pressure for when it was used in machine guns. That's why Fedorov eventually went with it, the 7.62x54R round was too powerful and breaking parts of the gun and affecting the cycling.
One should also consider that an assault rifle is more than a technical term, it also relates to usage. Nobody ever envisioned the Fedorov becoming the standard weapon of the Imperial Russian Army or the Soviet Red Army. Under the best circumstances, the shooter was supposed to be accompanied by an assistant gunner with spare magazines. That disqualifies it as an individual's weapon.

The entire thing was for the longest time Ian remained apolitical. Then he took a trip to South Africa, some asked him about a the political climate there, and Ian gave the answer based on his experience and those he talked to that things weren't as bad as some claimed. If the Fedorov is based on the Chauchat (which I'm quite willing to believe, considering it uses recoil operation, albeit not the exact same variation), then we go back to "marching fire", which is essentially what a "storm rifle" is for, except actually light enough that you can run with it.

Fedorov's rifle isn't as much built around marching fire as say the Chauchat or BAR were. In some ways the automatic fire was an afterthought and Fedorov's designs were initially semi-automatic. His intention was more similar to the later SVT-40 where it was to give an infantryman a self-loading rifle. He did (possibly)design an automatic selector in some prototypes, but it was seeing the Chauchat up close that led to the finalized design with the automatic fire selector.
