They are stubborn little shits. Well the ones that place value on "face" and "honor" or the japs that adopted "Bushido". All of it has roots in Confucianism.
"Bushido" is fucking retarded though and never existed like the japs believed it did. The samurai were just mercenaries and thugs for the local lords.
One of the main historical sources for the concept of Bushido is the Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunemoto. The book is a compilation of stories of past samurais and wisdom gleaned by the samurai. However Tsunemoto was a retainer (samurai) at the very end of the samurai period, like a few still existed, and he was a sickly, slightly feeble, person since birth. Because of his weakness he always idealised the strong samurai and yearned to be one. He eventually did through great discipline and his obsession with his romanticized version of the samurai. Even in the book you can see that many samurai were just thuggish assholes that got drunk and wrecked people's shit. Tsunemoto excuses this behavior with some thin correlation with an honorable pretense. The japs of course later adopted "Bushido" as their innate code of honor even though it's pretty dubious it ever really was followed by many samurai.
