/mre/ MRE Discussion

Just had myself a wonderful pre-Christmas feast of Elbow Macaroni and Tomato Sauce. I would rate it 5/7. I've only had a few of the menus and would like to know the best and the worst. Also MRE discussion.

Never tried it. Is it available for civvies like me?

I've been trying to manufacture my own. Apologies on the Ziploc - my vacuum sealer is DOA at the moment. I've made a few over the last couple days, and I think this one is:

1 Prego Ready Meals Marinara & Italian Sausage Pasta.
1 Starkist Chicken Creations Ginger Onions
2 Mini Slim Jims
1 Mini M&Ms
2 Sky Flakes crackers
1 Jif To Go creamy peanut butter
1 Walmart brand Pop-Tart clone
1 Walmart brand strawberry drink mix powder
1 Surplus MRE accessory pack
1 Surplus MRE flameless ration heater
2 Mints (left over from a trip to Sonic)

What do you think for an early attempt?

Eek! Forgot the pic.

yeah, civvie here, i only ever got it randomly in a few MREs out of the several cases I bought in the past.
but i found on online source that sell deserts, side dishes or main courses and other MRE components separately, or in bulk
i bought like a dozen deserts lol

can you post a pic of all the contents spread out?

>can you post a pic of all the contents spread out?
So you, uhh... want me to...

Get this out onto a tray?!

I’ve had the beef stew and chili Mac. They were both decent.

I don’t have a whole lot of experience with them, but my personal favorite was the maple sausage patty, #17 I believe it was. Had cashews with it.

yes

FYI I've tried some of those Bridgeford MRE sandwiches, they were horrible

Friendly reminder to all Jow Forumsommandos; DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT DRINK FRH WATER.

for you

I'd rather not unpack ones that are already done, but I can take pics of some of my ingredients. Here's some main courses. I bought all of these at Walmart and I don't think I paid more than two dollars for any of them.

Attached: Photo Dec 23, 21 05 20.jpg (4032x3024, 2.63M)

I also have tons of MRE accessory packs left over.

Thanks user. I can now have clogged bowels at only a fraction of the cost. But genuinely, thanks bro.

ah, yes. this is pretty crafty. i've pretty much used all this kind of stuff for camping or work lunches, but never put it together as an MRE
good ideas user

cool. i used to have a bunch of those too.
i love those earth brown spoons for some reason

Go shopping for candy a couple days after Halloween and you can pick up some great deals.

The Clif bars are a little more expensive, but good for energy. I'll throw one in, or a Pop-Tart if I'm feeling cheap.

>Clif bars
i like them for the nutrients, w/e.
but its like eating a compressed brick of bear poop

I like these because they're a bigger cracker with less salt than a Saltine. These are from the Philippines and are five bucks or so for one of these big buckets at my local Asian grocery store.

Attached: Photo Dec 23, 21 23 23.jpg (3024x4032, 2.44M)

And of course I need something to put on them.

A selection of drink mixes.

And finally something to make you say "Ohhhhh yeeeeeeahhhhhhhh".

>Carmela Vienna sausages
Are you Puerto Rican?

Attached: 3321894597_a4dd36abca_b.jpg (1024x768, 210K)

No, but they were in my local supermarket and looked like an interesting main course variation.

Carmelas are great. They actually taste like real meat, unlike the other vienna sausages. Too bad they have almost no protein. I recommend to buy canned pork/chicken pâté and hard crackers.

not a bad MRE setup senpai

I never understood putting instant ramen into an MRE. It requires extra water to make, somewhere to boil that water, measuring cups so you get the right amount, a bowl to eat it in... way more trouble than it’s worth on the trail. I think too often people confuse good prepping food or even good poor college kid food with good MRE food.

Ramen is entirely cooked already, A lot of hikers eat Ramen dry as a quick source of carbohydrates. Really though, it just sounds like you dislike Ramen, which is fine.

Attached: 1506760209762.jpg (562x437, 129K)

No, it’s not really cooked, it’s dry and awful, which is not what it’s supposed to be like when it’s cooked.

You're wrong, but ok. :)

O P E N S E S A M E

Here’s a list of my current food stores. I plan on getting a food saver for Christmas and packaging these into 24 hour rations and single meal rations.
>2 MRE(free from military)
>1 737g container of salt. $.89
>5 142g bags of yellow rice. $.79 each
>2 backpacker pantry Louisiana red beans and rice. $7 each (not worth it)
>7 mountainhouse meals. $4.50ish from Walmart. (Can’t find them for under $6 now)
>2 340g red beans. $1.29 each
>15 spam singles (79g) in retort pouches. $.99 each
>8 retort tuna (74g) $4.99 for a box of 4
>chicken of the sea tuna (142g) $1.49 each
>smoked salmon (85g). $1.99
>2 retort chicken breast (85g). $1.49
>2 beans and franks (220g) $.69
>2 Vienna sausage (135g) $.59
>2 sardine tins (106g) $.99
>2 instant mash potatoes (113g) $1.19
>peanut butter (454g) $2.89

My food is designed to be eaten using a small messkit and wood burning collapsible stove to prepare. I plan on adding some easy side snacks next before I package. What I plan to get is packets of peanut butter, crackers, fruit bars, dried fruit, peanuts, granola, oat meal, drink mixed, and those small tubes of honey sticks that can be had 10 for $1 at a local fruit stand. I also plan on storing some dry beans, rice, and pasta in sealable 5 gallon buckets

Here's some cheaper ice cream
>amazon.com/Mountain-House-Cream-Sandwich-12-Pack/dp/B01IWSG2VC/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1545660577&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=icecream sandwiches mountain house

Thanks, I tried a few on some hiking outings and have decided that they rate amazing but aren’t worth it for me to stock up on. I can get much more nutritional value for the same price. Can’t beat that storage life though. Saved your link in case I reconsider though

Pic related are the honey sticks I’m talking about. They make a great quick snack and calorie boost. I also like to add them to a cup of tea as well. Honey lasts forever if correctly stored.

this is cool. never seen these before
nice stash

Thanks. You can get them online, or if you have any fruit stands near you they usually have them.

Here’s 50 for $8. 5g a stick
sleepingbearfarms.com/store/honey-sticks-one-bundle-of-50/?gclid=Cj0KCQiApILhBRD1ARIsAOXWTzt_Zb-C9BTmkLnEUWBbAvmCqiPd_dDkFiz--jIL6oUsg4exKkQMmY8aAiCYEALw_wcB

thanks. that's a sweet deal. (o_

The 500 for $50 is 10 for a dollar, the $8 is 6 for $1. $8 one is good to test it out though.

I find it to fit nice and secure in cargo pockets

Looks fun, user

This is great and highly useful to do but doesn't come with chemical heaters like bought MREs do. There is a reason to hand over shekels for the real ones too.

yeah, i can imagine

not a problem at all. compact lightweight cookset should be part of a good kit. and even if you dont include the backpacking stove, making fire is easy

i've had alot of MREs and i have found those FRH are finicky and sometimes just make a big fucking mess and dont work at all

Agreed. I don’t like frh because they can be expensive and they are only a one time use. I’d much rather use a portable stove that uses biomass(wood) as fuel.

Tell the medic to hook me up to a Jalapeno Cheese IV and I'll be fine

I'm interesting in starting to eat MREs on the regular. I travel for work and get a per diem of $75 a day. For those who don't know, per diem is something your company gives you to pay for food/laundry/random bullshit ("oh I forgot my toothbrush at home") that comes up while you're traveling. The thing that makes per diem really great is that it's considered a living expense, not income, so it's not taxable. I travel about 290 days a year so that's almost $22k extra non-taxable that I get a year.
Eating at restaurants is expensive as shit, so to make the best of this opportunity I always choose hotels with cooking ranges and on my arriving travel day I'll stop by the grocery store and pick up stuff to make meals for my trip.
Do you guys think it would be worth it instead to travel and bring a bag full of ~15 MREs with me? I get free breakfast at the hotels and my trips are usually 11 nights long. I usually work through lunch.

Sounds like you have the same work setup I have as a Iron Worker.

Honestly you could do it for the cool factor, but I usually just pack sandwiches and usual snack grade shit for when I’m in hotel.

I can’t see any serious advantages.

Ok, lets get this onto a tray.

Fuck off

You’ll save lots of money on toilet paper too, because living on a diet of MREs, you’ll end up shitting about once every two weeks.

Picked up some stuff while food shopping today. This is about as much as I grab every shopping trip.

Attached: image.jpg (4032x3024, 1.99M)

Mres are fucking worthless dude. They cost about six times more than any other random bunch of packaged shelf stable foods and are not better. Just carry peanut butter and tortillas if you want actual cheap as possible food, and the packing density is lower. Mountain House freeze dried meals are the same price, better, and lighter by far. Just add hot water.

Or live off hotel breakfast alone for actual maxxx savings. One meal a day is plenty. They don't care if you take an apple orange and banana for later.

wrong

for $100 or less you get a case of 12 complete meals
that's less than $10/meal. sure its not gourmet but in general, its a decent value, considering one of the main benefits is long shelf life

All MREs are fucking gross. The only people who enjoy them are tryhards and wannabes.

>opinions

MENU 11 VEGGIE CRUMBLES IS THE BEST
I will trade anything for it, even my power bars

Attached: cat 1.gif (326x326, 255K)

Is it necessary to freeze dry?
Is it necessary to vacuum seal?

>interesting in starting to eat MREs on the regular. I travel for work and get a per diem of $75 a day. For those

They taste like shit. The only thing good in them are the snacks. Also they're like 2600 calories a meal so if you want to gain weight dig in. Did I mention they make a metric shit ton of plastic waste? Also, they'll plug you up like a bio butt plug. Your ass will be extruding 2" steel rebar. So if you're the kind of guy that enjoys taking epic Chad shits once a week instead of virgin daylies, there's that.

And it’s like pooping and even more compressed bar of bear poop

There’s just something about bridgeford products that makes me want to puke after the second bite.

Get a case or two to get the idea out of your system. After a few days, the most foul smelling farts, and shitting a tube of concrete that’s been steaming for a week, you’ll be perfectly fine with having something else for work. Regular commercial food is head and heals better than mres.

yeah out of all the stuff like this that i've ever tried. Bridgeford is the absolute worst. absolutely disgusting. i need to remember to never buy that crap again
