its a crudely built silencer. I imagine it has a net positive effect, however, I think it would work better if the end of it wasnt open like that. also it def wont work on larger loads.

Why cut the end off? It would work other wise, the entire point is letting the gasses coming out of the barrel after the round leaves to expand in an enclosed area. Would most definitely melt if fired consistently

That really depends on your choice of caliber and load, and to an extent action.
9mm Luger and .45ACP can be hearing safe, for instance.

My personal opinion here, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I think drill press shavings (the large spiral ones) would work better as baffles than #4 steel wool.

Just get a maglite with a solvent adapter and cap and get some 'storage cups' and put holes in them. Seriously it's not hard, start with a quarter inch drill and hand ream it to size.

One time I bought a solvent trap. Poked a hole through the screens and drilled the hole slightly larger at the end because it was almost too small for the bullet to go through while at work and on lunch we put it on my friends 223 bolt action rifle. Drove to the wooded area by work and popped a shot off. It literally fucking exploded and the only piece left was the part that screwed onto the barrel.

That's because you fired 223 through a fairly thin piece of aluminum. Go to a Napa4003 or a wix sized trap for bigger than 9mm. Apply a thonk user.
