I know it's not a huge sum, but the reason they were successful is that they went for multiple smaller but safe and meticulously planned heists. I've read up on it further, and it turns out the reason they were caught was ultimately that they had a fucking woman (gf of one of the robbers) getaway driver on their last job. She got nervous and veered off the road.

North Hollywood Shootout, "The High Incident Bandits". Robbed banks with full auto AKs with 100 round drum mags, full body armor. Only got caught because by chance a cop car was passing by when they were entering a bank.
The whole incident was captured by a news helicopter when they begin to exit the bank, you can find the video on youtube. Longest and "bloodest" police shootout in the U.S. This incident is why cops begen to put AR's in their patrol cars because shotgun and pistols were ineffective against their armor.
They also took a bunch of pain killers so if they do get shot they wouldnt even feel the pain.

Came here to post this, remains unsolved to this date and extreme brutality and violence of actions begs the question what the fucking deal with these guys was. People have had theories they were part of some GLADIO stay-behind unit enforcing some weird state-of-tension bullshit and/or were part of Belgian gendarme units. Other theories surrounding their use of violence is that of obfuscating a targeted assassination.

Let's not forget the time an old man armed with a break action shotgun tried to face down the military gang's machine gunner and nearly got himself turned into swiss cheese.
There was also another incident incident where a man in a station wagon rammed their van in an attempt to stop their getaway. After a burst of machine gun fire the man realized that he had his kids in the car, and trying to take on a squad of robbers armed with fully automatic weapons was probably a bad idea.
Then there was the time one of the guys in the military gang shot a smiley face into a pane of bullet-resistant glass and yelled "HAVE A NICE DAY!" to the bank staff as he exited.
A few years ago another gang of robbers pulled off a straight up Hollywood Heist by stealing a chopper, landing it on the roof of a cash storage facility, entering through they roof and breaching locked doors with explosive charges, they used gasoline powered saws to cut their way into the vaults and steal millions in cash. Those guys carried full auto AKs, but got away without needing to open fire.
