M1917 aka Eddystones aka American Enfields are nice and underrated. If you look for one be sure to try out their different names. One plus about them is, from what I understand since I haven't actually tried this myself, the chamber is strong enough to withstand modern hot ammo. Apparently people have rebuilt them into modern big game rifles.

Any modern 30-06 load will be fine in a m1917. The only gun chambered in 06 that needs special treatment is the garand, and an adjustable gas plug will keep the op rod from beating itself to death.
