Except the Gripen is great. It's just not a fifth gen stealth fighter.
It's ridiculously cheap, simple to maintain, and great for large countries with a smaller budget. As you can keep three to five Gripens in operation for the cost of a single F-35, it's great if you have a lot of air space to cover, but not enough money to be able to cover it with the F-35.

Will it lose against an F-35 in air to air combat? Sure. But a plane in the air will beat a plane on the ground any day. And most countries who fell for the F-35, will not afford to keep them operational.

well euros will leave pretty much all of their planes as hangar queens regardless so the point is moot.

Literally that. You only need a few people and almost no infrastructure to operate it. Sure, ghe frame and spares might end up as expensive as an F-16 but its far less of a bitch to work on, and basically all maintsnence can be done without specialist tools, equipment or infrastructure.

A small surface of asphalt in the middle of the forrest, a few guys and one 20 foot container of equipment is enough to keep 4 planes flying for weeks.
