With that in mind, Japan's Navy is mostly geared around quick response and ASW. Their ASuW is quite lacking and their main role sees them act as support elements of American fleets while taking a little more control in the above mentioned missions. Generally speaking, neither Navy nor Air Force can deal with China on its own but they don't have to because the Chinese can't deal with the US on its own. Having Japan, and possibly South Korea, operate in the same AO as well will only make things much harder for China. Allies are a precious thing and allow the US to concentrate on the heavy lifting.
