Explain in as polite terms as possible that if you're a responsible adult (e.g. paying rent) and that you know the rights/responsibilities of gun ownership.

If you want a more strong arm tactic, you could say that if they attempt to take your firearm that could constitute theft and is a misdemeanor, arrestable offense, etc.

Some would say you fucked up when you decided to tell your parents that you're buying a gun, instead of keeping that shit to yourself. You guys are a bunch of morons. When I got my first rifle, my parents hated it, but having grown up around bb rifles, the transition for them was easy. Just be an adult about it. Let them know you know how to safely handle it, and if necessary give in to concessions (i.e. ammo is kept separate), at least until they forget. They won't give a fuck after 6 months.
