It was originally established for a perfectly legitimate purpose (in the case of the NRA, it was promoting competency with firearms among the public following the poor performance of the Union Army in the Civil War) that ended up ceasing to serve the interests of the group it purports to represent because of money. Guys like Wayne LaPierre, the Executive Vice President of the NRA, have salaries of millions of dollars a year. Do you think the NRA really wants to win the battle for 2A when that would also eliminate the need for the NRA to continue to exist as an organization that pays him?

Let me clarify what I meant, because I think I didn't get my point across well. I know that the NRA does not get results when it comes to gun rights, and I don't mean to suggest that they are conducting information warfare in favor of gun rights. What they are doing is using information warfare to protect/influence the public opinion of the NRA as an organization and its efficacy as an organization. They have every reason to seriously consider going after their most vocal critics, because it's very hard to trace back to them if done correctly and because having social media figures with (when combined) millions of youtube followers and possibly upwards of ten million viewers presenting clear evidence that your organization is a sham that sells out 2A and then fundraises off of its own selling out, this has massive implications for your bottom line. The same rationale for why they pay guys like Hickok to shill for them is also the same rationale for why they would consider trying to silence their critics who they can't easily buy.
