If we defined the regions by culture or civil war participation you could say parts of Ohio and Indiana are vaguely southern enough or that Kentucky is part of the midwest but not one does, it's the south. The borders are clearly defined.

I actually think the Rocky Mountain region might be your best bet, specifically Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona. There's a lot more open spaces, and some people can actually just walk out of town to shoot their guns (depending on the area). But be careful with the town or jurisdiction you chose to live in. Some places can be really corrupt, government wise. Keep up on the research a bit. And if you do settle in somewhere, make sure you have a good defense and public relations (neighbors) plan. It will help, in case of any disputes. Think of it like setting up your own personal enclave.

Kentucky is always included as part of the Midwest. The "Midwest" always includes Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, and Kentucky.
