What matters is you need to convince a jury that you had a reasonable fear for your life or the life of someone else. For example if someone threatens to kill you a bunch, then rushes you with a bat.
But I believe some states require you to make every attempt to de-escalate or remove yourself from the situation, as opposed to daring them to come at you.

This is basically why they are in jail. They didn't really make any attempts to de-escalate. You get the sense that they were waiting for him to attack rather than trying to prevent him from doing so.

No, because the armed thief isn't goad a violent reaction out of you. He's trying to rob you and will mostly do it in 30 seconds. This mattress affair had going on for at least a couple days, and both sides continually escalated it until one of them ended up dead. I don't think they were entirely wrong to bring weapons, but they also could have done more to de-escalate the situation.
