Because we would look stupid if we just left. There is no military purpose in Afghanistan, no goal, no ultimate objective. We invaded to find the ghost of a terrorist, and met a cancerous insurgency spawned by the Soviets in the 80s. We stayed and fought what the Soviets gave up on, and here we are almost 2 decades in, with no tangible success to speak of. Furthermore, the radical ideology has spread to neighboring regions, which will undoubtedly provide incentive for further occupation.

I admire the Taliban’s courage and tenacity. Imagine being a random guy who joins his local religious militia to defeat the invaders who have had months of training in tactics and physical strength and endurance and have been mentally conditioned to fight under the stresses of combat. You can also be air striked at any moment by drones or planes you can’t even see and there ain’t shit you can do about it. You don’t even know how to read, yet not only are you holding them off, you are gaining ground and advancing. For 17 fucking years, multiple generations have fought and will continue to fight and never surrender despite the odds being against them in technology, money, and numbers. Combat is scary enough as a U.S. soldier, imagine being the guy on the other end of an Apache nose gunner.

Neither Iran nor Pakistan want stability in Afghanistan. There are numerous countries supporting the opposition to the US -backed gov't. The Afghani govt is fractured, full of corruption, and focused on getting $ while the Taliban are united and dedicated to their mission of seizing the country. Defeating the Taliban would require the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, something the US is unwilling. The better strategy is to bribe as many Taliban commanders as possible and assassinate the ones who wouldn't cooperate. A program like this was initially successful but stopped because the war wouldve finished too quickly and military contract $$ would dry up

They're a collection of communities and tribes. They see value in that and very little in any other more idealistic or abstract association. This is why other cultures affect them so little.

It seems to from reading this thread and having read a bit on the wiki that the last 40 years have fucked over the country so massively that it's pretty much beyond repair, even worse than Somalia.
The educated and western elite had fled the country already by the 90s with probably only few returning (the afghan cosmonaut the soviets send to space in 1988 fleed to germany in '92 and is now an accountant in a small town near Stuttgart in south west germany), the chaos of the 90s has left the country in such an extreme state of disrepair that hardly anything was left working, the rebuilding efforts by the US and her allies have been totally aimless and often dysfunctional, the rebuild political structures are often just institutionalizations of existing tribal power structures, nearly everybody who gives a serious fuck about himself and has the education and/or cash moves overseas making the current try at establishing a functioning state massively more difficult, leaving behind only cronies and corruption.
