We classically run from left to right, even if you're on the other side.

On an actual flag, the flagpole is attached to the side with the blue field. If you imagine a colors bearer going forward, the blue field will be on the left side when seen from the left and the right side when viewed from the right. Since the flag patch is worn on the right side, it was determined the blue field should be on the right to symbolize the idea of the flag always advancing, regardless of normal rules for flying or hanging a flag.

Short answer: It's meant to look like a real flag on a pole that is flying as the soldier moves forward. Having it displayed normally makes it look like the soldier is retreating. No shit that's the real answer.

Long answer: US Flag Code implicates that the Union is meant to be displayed in position of highest honor which is the top-most and left-most. This is the reason why the Union is inverted when the flag is displayed vertically so that it remains in top-left corner and why US flag is left-most flag when carried by an honor guard, municipal courts/buildings, multi-national meetings, and top-most when sharing a pole with other banners (It's only when displayed in a procession of other flags where the rules deviate in which case the US flag will be front and center of at least two or more flags).

The Code however is scarce on details that go over how to display the image of the flag when it's not actually a flag itself (ie patches, stickers, digital images, etc). Hence the military decided to go with the reversed image for reasons already stated. It technically isn't wrong to have it reversed for a patch nor was the military the first to use the reverse flag image so they ran with it.
