MLA/MLD versions were decent, but by that time it was one of the last third gen high trust interceptors desperately trying to make do against fourth gen air superiority fighters.
10 years too late, it was the Russian answer to the largely outdated interceptor concepts of the 60s.
If it had got the helmet sight for the MLD it could have been great, but that would probably have been too much of a rival to the early MiG-29s so couldn't have that.
And it was still a maintenance nightmare like almost all swing wings.
Still looks great in its brutal simplicity, just looks like it wants to go fast.

I don't think it was obsession with the type as much as they couldn't develop and manufacture replacements in enough numbers fast enough.
Their capability and resources were stretched thin already at the start of the war when it came to much of the materials needed for high performance aircraft engines, which is the reason the Zero is designed the way it is in the first place.

Found this today.
Second half has some nice views of East German and Soviet MiG-23Ms landing and resupply on a autobahn base.
I get that this is just an exercise for the cameras but i was surprised to see them load R-3/R-13 variants of some sort, two different versions in fact, with neither R-60s or R-23s in sight.
I wonder if this is one of those eastern secrecy precautions where they would sometimes hold some new weapons and aircraft from use in Eastern Germany from fear it would somehow end up across the border by accident.
May also be very early use of MiG-23 before R-60 and R-23 productions were full up to speed so using older munitions for training could make sense.
