We had a good conversation about building bunkers in the fallout thread last month. An user gave us, specficly me, on the details on building a bunker.

Unfortunately user, most people lurking here probably make 40k 50k or more a year here.

To build a bunker to live in takes a lot money and regulations time to work around, namely 6 foot bunker doors.

By all means, post the costs and and details on how to build a bunker home to live in like the last user before you.

If you want protection from fallout, you could drape your house with 6 mil plastic sheeting, seal the seams with duct tape and you’re good. Rig some ducting, fans, and HEPA furnace filters to give you ventilation and you can easily go the 3 weeks it takes for radiation levels to get back down to inconsequential.

Protip: you don’t need Cheyenne Mountain to protect yourself from fallout. You need access to a hardware store and an uninterrupted weekend.

Then just tarp off a few rooms. Bathroom, hallway, 1 bedroom, maybe a living room or den. That 6 mil sheeting I’m talking about comes in 20X100 foot rolls. You must have quite the casa grande if a couple of rolls isn’t enough to tent your whole house.

None of those things are nukes, control nukes, or communicate with nukes. They’re very unlikely to be on a first or second strike target list.

If you’re using Hollywood science and metrics, sure. In the real world, things like PK factors and target priority doctrines tend to leave 99% of urban areas untouched. Anything within 10 miles or so of any kind of nuke base is probably going to be in for a bad time, becaues anything that launches, controls, or communicates with nukes is going to get hit multiple hits.

Lets fo some back of the envelope math here. ICBMs and the nukes they carry are complex devices. We could probably safely assume that there’ll be around a 1% failure rate somewhere along the killchain. That takes 19 nukes off the table right there. Then we can figure that another 10 will be intercepted. That number could go a lot higher, but lets keep it low. Now, lets look at current counterforce doctrines. If you want to kill a nuclear weapon before it gets used on you, you need to launch 2 or 3 warheads at it to make absolutely certain it’s dead. So each boomer base catches a couple, each SAC bomber base catches a couple, and each missile silo catches a couple. All of that right there would just about deplete the Russian inventory, before they even have a chance to start launching at population centers. And a depleted arsenal means they have to get on their knees and take whatever terms we decide to shove down their throat.

There's fallout shelters and bunkers and whatnot but I actually believe the most robust thing you could do is form some kind of strong community of people you really like, or at least share common values with.
You could survive the initial bullshit in a bunker, but coming out you're going to need to organize and fast if you want to bounce back and have any chance of defending against raiders, animals, disease, famine, or develop anything resembling a joyful life.
I prescribe forming healthy, socially viable communities of >10 families, each with their own homestead in some close proximity to each other, with some shared amenities in the center. Specialize what you grow but maintain lots of redundancy, people should know husbandry, veterinary science, and human medicine (obviously). A church. Maybe a pub or public meetinghouse. Some arrangement for militia action and self defense, possibly even town walls to retreat to.
Basically look at the new englanders settling the new world vs the scotts irish.
The Quakers organized hard, formed strong communities, met and discussed things frequently, and ended up one of the economic centers for the entire world. Meanwhile the scotts irish fucked off into their little hollers in the apps and are still trying to get over that economic disadvantage.
Just look at how robust the human town is vs the isolated family. Isolated families don't fare very well for very long, but there's towns that have existed (with prosperity for the original founders' families) since the stone age.
So, Jow Forums. Do you like your neighbors? Could you coordinate longterm action with them, and be sure that everyone will hold up their part of the bargain? Could you all agree to some system of justice and not abandon it once justice needs to be meted out? Could you accept newcomers with something of value to offer and quickly integrate them?
These are the big questions that will govern who comes out ok and who doesn't, in my opinion.
