In reality these are good jobs made because there is not a whole lot of work in the arctic. The other side of it is there really aren't any other units in the world beyond other aboriginal tribes which have the knowledge and will to patrol and live in these environments on a yearly basis.

Their guns are mostly for defense against wildlife and I'd imagine those Tikkas are a shitload more accurate and lighter to boot than a FAL.

Their rifle had to be a bolt action, magazine fed, moderate sized caliber for dealing with things like polar bears, have readily available parts, iron sights with option for a scope, and stand the harsh winters.

They also help with arctic training for the rest of the Army. I worked with them before. Many are the generic chug with a bolt gun, but many are actually pretty knowledgeable on survival, tracking ,etc.

The Canadian Rangers are not a non-government administered group. They are considered part of the Canadian Forces, are subject to military law, and are paid by the government just like any other soldier.

Theres probably some Everest-climbing gear that's good enough to keep your hand partially mobile. In the end, the simplest way to keep things warm is to put a filler between your hand and the environment, so maintaining mobility and warmth are a battle.
