So you thought you could trust your cell phone

This just in from the jolly little town of Alta, northern Norway. Earlier tonight the police received a warning about a possible bomb at the local airport. Well, that's the world we live in now... except that this time, our uniformed state benefactors decided to have all local cell phone net works turned off. I am not comfortable with this. I get that one would want to avoid having some local Allahu Akbar candidate call in 'you da bomb' to the mechanism. And Norwegians can certainly do with a few blessed moments of holiday from the damn phones.

But I have never felt a stronger urge to get a proper radio up and running. Once the govt have found that they can do this and the big phone companies aren't bitching, it's going to be a standard tool. For the next demonstration maybe? Can't have the civilians go around and have access to information at times like that.

i need a bogdanoff edit of this

Honestly chilling when you think about it.

Not surprising. Places like India and Pakistan have done this before in response to riots and social media rumors. You should be expecting that they have total control over all your utilities, especially comms

So if I want to commit a crime in Norway and not have anyone able to call the police all I have to do is call in a bomb threat?

Pretty dumb when you can just use jammers in the afected area and avoid not only phone calls but radio signals and wifi too.

But yes, for many other situations (specially riots) it can become a logical standard procedure.

Cell phone vulnerability has been a storyline in almost every major news-informed TV cop show going back decades and was a huge aspect of the Arab Spring. If you thought you could trust your handi in the current year then firearms are too complicated for you.

fuck off Jow Forums

>bogdanoff edit

I am not familiar with this term?

>Cell phone vulnerability has been a storyline in almost every major news-informed TV cop show going back decades and was a huge aspect of the Arab Spring. If you thought you could trust your handi in the current year then firearms are too complicated for you.
Fucking this. You might actually be retarded, considering all the news that has been published over the years about cell phones being easily hackable, much less about the fucking government being able to just flip a switch and turn that shit against you.

I know it is doable. And we've seen local nets go down before because of fire or brownouts. Not that amusingly, our emergency networks seem to have a safety power source of just a few minutes. It's one of the vulnerabilities they are supposed to be working one,

But I have have been using cell phones, first at work and then privately when they became a common thing, here in Norway for 30 years. This is the FIRST instance I know of where the authorities here have done a shutdown. Connect this with the recent warnings the same damn authorities have come with that a foreign invasion's first step would be to take out our communication infrastructure.

Holy shiet, it b da RAINBOW TEAM SIX
Just like in da boook!!!

I remember the Egyptian government disconnected the entire bloody Internet when they had their revolution. People had to dust off their old modems and were connecting to services set up by supporters in Europe to get online. It shows that the government is perfectly willing to do what it has to to remain in control of the situation, but also that there are always workarounds for those willing to try.

I wouldn't recommend doing it, but there are open source alternatives to the hardware and software used for running a mobile phone network. You'd have to have it ready ahead of time, and it would be very easy for the authorities to locate the DIY towers, but setting up a small scale mobile phone network for a private individual is fairly practical and only modestly expensive. The last ten years of technological progress has made so many things that were previously only practical for a company, now practical for a hobbyist to do.

buture bow!!! DDD:

>but setting up a small scale mobile phone network for a private individual is fairly practical
You got any leads on where to learn more about this ?

This is one alternative I had not thought of. I was mainly thinking radio. To get your own cell phone network up you'd be wanting your own towers, right? And a central.

lerk moar

They turn off a cellular phone grid to prevent any radio frequencies from detonating a device and some how you think theyd be cool with you using a radio device?

I've been thinking about stuff like this.I'd use baofengs for the actual communication, and strong hand ciphers like RS44 for a bit of security. There is absolutely no way to get the coverage or the bandwidth of gsm with such basic shit, but I figured you could compensate with good organization.

"Not being cool with it" is one thing. Being able to stop all communications is another thing altogether.

How fast is RS 44 compared to OTP? Regardless, have you considered monkeynet for high speed traffic?

Cellphones have practically unlimited range and are much more likely to be used than old fashioned radio control.
They probably use weak wide band jammers in close proximity of the bomb, but that doesn't affect any radio users in a wider area.

Difference is, the cell phone networks can be sent down with the push of a button if the big hats want to. Blocking all the bandwidths on a local level takes more effort.

>Cellphones have practically unlimited range

WHAT?!

Rs44 is slower than otp worksheets but you can encrypt much more text with a single rs44 sheet. Also,rs44 is not unbreakable, but it's still secure against ciphertext-only attacks.

Compared to handheld radios. You can trigger bombs from thousands of miles away.

Have you considered monkeynet for higher speed traffic?

With the help of the cell phone towers, sure. Your actual handheld device, the only thing you have some measure of control over, might at best work a few miles in flat and unforested terrain. And it's even shorter than it used to; they limited the range further because the old 900 networks cost more to implement and allowed fewer concurrent connections.

Got links?Google does nothing.

Maybe youre missing my point.
If law enforcemnt is inconviencing you momentarily to check a potential terroristic threat, your pretty much going to have to cooperate and enjoy the ride, like everyone else.
This calls to mind the morons the speed ahead into a traffic jam , as if their approaching speed is going to factor some magical new work around strategy. Youre in traffic just like everyone else. Im sure they all want to get moving along quickly. Dont be that asshole.
In the same analogy if it was solid traffic in a state where lane splitting is illegal , the cop isnt going to just cut you a break and let you drive 60 down the lane split just because you have a motorcycle

(For all the users that are easily thrown off the main point— if law enforcement kills all communications for an emergency, it’s unlikely they’ll make an exception to allow you to use your special snowflake communication in the area)

Did they turn off cell towers near the airport or all the towers in the town?Cutting all communication in the town would dangerous.

It's a Jow Forums thing don't give him too hard a time.

Some Jow Forums meme about how two europeans with dr seuss plastic surgery are jokingly referred to as superhuman elites who control and meddle with the entire world and beyond. The only people who use it are Jow Forums4chan plebbitors who try to feel like they're part of the oldfag circlejerk.

It's just a dual axis chart tailored to your needs. It is very fast in actual use and can be reprogrammed quickly based on planned shifts to the scales.

As far I've read they made Telenor and Telia, the main service providers in Norway, cut off communication in the area. Telenor has most of the towers and Telia the rest, while a number of smaller providers rent capacity from these two. Telenor and Telia also rent capacity from each other if need be. This means that if a minor provider didn't want to shut down, they'd have no towers to provide through.

Other comm services, like radio and internet and cable phones, were still running. Fuck knows what happened to the highly erratic emergency system; civilians can't access those anyway.

The downtime was just an hour. And sure none here mind a little downtime to twart a terrorist. But it sets an example. And to me, it is a reminder that the govt decides what is an emergency. Next time it could be a Yellow Vests demonstration. Or someone demonstrating towards the EU. One thing is certain; they won't be asking any of us before they pull the plug next time.

>it’s unlikely they’ll make an exception
It's entirely possible that they will overlook it altogether - or not.

Ah. I see. Thank you for clearing that up. I've been on Jow Forums years and that one was new to me. I thought he wanted a quick translation or something.

More like a quick rundown

Triplets, hm? All righty then.

-Alta police receives a bomb threat against a plane at the local airport.
-Details are limited even now, but indications are that they fear that something could go boom by a phoned message.
- Plane is halted. Airport is locked. Cell phone networks are taken down.
- Plane and airport is searched. Cops can't find any bomb, or suspicious persons, or anything else. The entire airport is the size of a McDonalds with parking space, so it doesn't take that long.
- Networks come back up, plane is released, passengers are released, everyone has coffee.

That's all there is to it that we're allowed to know. And the only reason I've posted it on Jow Forums is that a cell phone lockout has never happened before here, and puts some fresh perspective on our frequent radio and prepper threads.
