The north winning did a lot of harm in the long run, especially in the post-war decades right after.
The White League, mass unemployment for blacks, many in the south losing their land, recovering from the obvious death toll, the Union pissing off the blacks because they didn't fulfill a ton of their promises, reconstruction in shambles, and a divided nation.
That last point... What's the point of the "United States" if you're more divided than ever?

In my opinion they should have just cut their losses, let the south secede, and get on with life.
There was plenty of territory to go around to establish new industry and trade for the north if they were so concerned about their GDP.

The March to the Sea was of lesser strategic importance than the capture of New Orleans, the naval blockade, Vicksburg, and Gettysburg. On the other hand the March is the most visible, easily understood, and least controversial (in a military sense) of the successful Union campaigns. Grant was a much better general but lacks the memetic potential.

In some ways I don't see any problem with this.
It would be natural instead of forced, just as how Europe was for hundreds of years, and would inevitably allow us to form unbreakable camaraderie with other countries that share the same continent.
Obviously the US as we know it would cease to exist, but you'd have a much deeper culture, tradition, and rich (not entirely monetary) people as a result.
In the end this is just wishful thinking though, but you get the idea.

Had the south been allowed to secede, at one point or another they would have freed those under them on their own accord in order to follow the example set by other nations. Not to mention that it's a hell of lot cheaper to run agricultural equipment than feed, house, and provide medical care for slaves.
Hell, I'm sure most of them would have freed them and then just subsequently hired them to work on their plantations and soon-to-be factories.
