$100 Type 99

Picked this Bubba’ed and rusty type 99, thinking about restoring it because it is already in poor condition anyways. Did I do good Jow Forums? And general Arisaka thread

Ignore the autists who’ll shout “LOL you got ripped off bro”. Restoring a bubba’d gun to its former glory is always a good deed. You’re a good guy, user.

Mum is intact

Looks like just the bolt is bubba'd and the crossbolt is missing. Prime restoration material OP

Yeah the bolt is bubba’ed and the ange he set it at actually caused the stock to crack when the bolt is down, I’ve got a friend who does wood work so I think I can fix it

Good buy, even good condition type 99's i see for $500 all have them ground off.

Ironically i saw a Ruger ranch rifle at this same auction go for $1000. This was the cheapest gun that sold

Thank you for this, running the numbers now

Shit bluing and a fucked bolt. But the rest isn't bubbad. Amazing actually.

It’s not bluing, it paint... In order to take the screws and stuff off I’m going to have to remove it. I’ve done some reading and apparently the Japs painted some rifle for corrosion control, I don’t think it was Bubba’s work

Not bad honestly. Has it been rechambered? You got a nice deal. A new bolt will probably be $100, and for another $100 to can fix the wood and get a cross bolt.

Other than the stock looking like ass and the fucked bolt handle, it was definitely worth it. Not sure if you are well versed on how the Arisaka's stock toe is attached, but that separated look is normal considering its condition and age. The bottom part is dovetailed into the rest of the main stock. Take care taking the rest out of the stock though, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a lot of rust on the metal surfaces underneath the stock. Can't make out the series number off your pic, go here for it oldmilitarymarkings.com/japanese_markings.html

The last arisaka I saw was a beautiful spotter in .30-06. Shame it was converted but at least it was a professional job and not some bubba bullshit

I haven’t checked yet, it was reading 7.57mm at the muzzle so I think it hasn’t been

$100 is a pretty good price for a functioning rifle with most of the original parts and no crazy mods. Having the chrysanthemum is a nice bonus but it doesn't really effect the pricing anymore (in the past it would double the price of the rifle but now it seems like most people just want it to not be sporterized.)
Stock looks very dry in addition to the obvious crack. If you try to do something like refinish it, be careful with sanding it, Japanese finishes involved something from the sumac family so wear a mask. Otherwise, good luck. A new bolt, new crosspin, and fix the crack and you've got a Type 99 in near original condition.

Definitely Kokura Arsenal, late 1942-early 1943. If I'm seeing the series marking correctly.

Why did bubba remove the recoil lug and then fucking fire it? That's why the stock is broken there.

That's a 20th series made by Kokura Arsenal, which was the first run of 100,000 rifles that Kokura did. One of the distinctive features of that series is the sling swivel on upside down. The bigger part of the loop should be on the top, yet it's on the bottom which would put all the pressure of the sling on one point.

Some were painted (it's thought to be a Naval thing) but I am not sure about it here.

Eh, $100 is about all it's worth, but it will still cost you more to restore it than it's worth.

The stock has already been sanded and refinished. That's why the stock looks the way it does.

So long as OP doesn't spend more than ~$300 on parts and labor, he will have gotten about the same final result as buying an unmodified Type 99. Plus the ability to say he fixed it up a bit. Only thing missing is the dust cover but those are very rare on both the Type 38 and 99 rifles that were brought back.

It may end up being a simple fix. Drill a pilot hole, screw in a brass screwed, file flush. Use epoxy and a clamp if you feel fancy. Granted this fix was usually used for cracks in the butt and wrist of stock, but as long as it keeps it from splitting further it'll work. Common fix seen on SMLE stocks. Numrich doesn't have any crossbolts in stock ( I'm bored, I looked) but you can always check ebay, for some reason milsurp small parts are always on ebay despite ebay being super-liberal-anti gun

Ah okay.

"Restored" that gun will be worth around $200.
The only way you'll find the recoil lug would be to get one off of a bubba hacked up stock. They would also be a pain to remove. Realistically, you'll have to make a screwdriver to fit it.

Congrats on the gat.

Why somebody would jewel the bolt on a arisaka is beyond me. At least the previous owner didn't take a hacksaw to the barrel and sporter the stock.

I''m the frozen socialist hellhole known as Canada and then only Arisaka I saw in person was a sportered one with the stock held together by fucking rivets on sale at a local gunshow for $650.

Yeah, I knew it might but I like history too much too let it walk away

new bolt, glass bed the action, and get a new cross bolt

Coulda done a lot worse. See if you can get a picture of the bore for us (shine a light down the open breech).

The stock is beat to fuck but unlike most Bubbad Arisakas it is all there. That's a really good start. You might need a new bolt body though. Intact mum is a good feature too.

It isn't financially worth it to restore, but yours would be a good project since all the hardest things to replace are still there.

Before I Rama patch down it

After, pretty gnarly pitting I know

I think that's some of the spray paint actually.

Glad to see an Arisaka thread, OP. My uncle has one (I forget which variant) sitting in my grandfather's closet collecting dust. Next time I speak to him I'm going to see if he doesn't mind me having a go at cleaning it up.

That's cool, I'll just forget to actually post the link.

Thanks, if anything it helps my collection look a little cooler

i don think thats pitting
the 99s have a chrome lined bore. hit it with some solvent and a copper brush

Obligatory

Start hunting around for another Kokura bolt

Other than the missing recoil lug it doesn't look too bad.

If you decide to redo the stock, there is a stain color called "Victorian Maple" that should approximate the urishi finish.

You got a whole rifle for what most pay for a bayonet, gratz
