The Portuguese Army is to receive a comprehensive number of small arms between 2019 and 2022, a source within Army Headquarters told Jane's on 28 February.
A multi-year contract was recently awarded by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to FN Herstal on behalf of the Portuguese Army for 11,000 5.56 mm SCAR-L STD assault rifles (featuring 14.5-inch barrels), 1,700 of which will be fitted with the FN40GL 40 mm grenade launcher; 300 7.62 mm SCAR-H assault rifles; 450 7.62 mm SCAR-H PRs (precision rifles); 850 5.56 mm Minimi Mk3 light machine guns; 320 7.62 mm Minimi Mk3 light machine guns; and related accessories and services.
"The Portuguese will be acquiring 12,600 small arms and 1,700 underbarrel grenade launchers from FN Herstal by 2022. They will include SCAR-Ls, SCAR-Hs, and Minimi Mk. 3s. Portugal's current standard issue service rifle is the H&K G3A3, while some special-mission units are also equipped with the H&K G36 or IMI Galil."
I'm honestly glad HK is getting BTFO'd. People need to accept Belgian superiority.

That Larue mount about to fall off is really bothersome.
Nicholas Barnes
when did FN make the OICW?
Mason Ross
They're dirt cheap for the military, FN just kikes civilians hard.
Gavin Phillips
then why didnt the us navy or india? order them in spite of being the best in their trials?
Brandon Gutierrez
because trials are for blowing your budget on so it doesn't get taken away next year
Jacob Brown
because the navy already has a billion m4s and the SF already gets to use whatever they want
also pajeets are arrogant idiots and thought they could make a better indigenous gun
Joseph Myers
but didn't the poos go for the Sig in 762NATO?
Liam Russell
SiG already makes a lot of parts in India for the US market.
FN probably couldn't find an acceptable industrial partner there to meet India's insistence on technology transfer, while SiG has been on a race to the bottom for a while.
Christopher Price
>and the SF already gets to use whatever they want And they choose the HK and Block II/MK18/URGI over the SCAR 16. Maybe there's a reason for that.
Gavin Nelson
>Maybe there's a reason for that.
Yeah, it's called electing not to fund a redundant capability in the face of budget cuts and increased spending requirements.
Liam Martin
Its a smaller, African version of Brazil
Jason Brooks
>Portuguese troop speaks Portuguese in the presence of SCAR >Voids warranty
Charles Lopez
No, the reason is that the gun sucks and brings nothing to the table. If SF wanted the SCAR 16, they'd have the SCAR 16
Cameron Carter
They did want the SCAR, hence the reason that program came to exist in the first place.
Zachary Martin
And why it was dropped faster than a hot potato when they got their hands on them. They're not using the SCAR 16. Face it.
Jonathan Thompson
Nothing was dropped, the entire SCAR FoW was adopted (Mk13, Mk16, Mk17 & later Mk20). However, the Mk16 *was* defunded. Why? Because in 2009 SOCOM was facing 15% budget cut across the board, while simultaneously being tasked with standing up additional battalions at every group. Why then spend even $1 for a rifle that provides the same 5.56mm capability as the M4A1's they receive for free? Why continue to invest in a dedicated 5.56mm platform when the Mk17 common receiver makes that system redundant? Why am I even bothering to explain this to someone who is incapable of understanding anything at all?
Justin Robinson
india does use scars they also use augs, tavors, f2000s, sig 550s, aks, vz aks, new aks, and ars indian procurement doesn't make any sense, and the only conclusion i can come to is that they have no idea what the fuck they're doing
