Machetes are literally the cheapest blades out there. They are made to cut branches and shit. Go on Amazon, search for machetes in the DIY or Gardening sction, close your eyes and point on one.
Seriously: Look at places on earth where they still use machetes for real work. Even if you turned an old rusty leaf spring into one you had top-notch steel. Most machetes are just stamped sheet that got ground a little.

What I wanted to say: You can't go wrong with any brand. As long as it's a "real" machete and not some toy to kill zombies, it will do any task it was made for. And no, you dont chop wood with machetes, thats what axes and hatchets are there for.

That's not an Ontario 18 inch Military Machete

I live on the Island of Saipan, Marianas Islands and hike the jungles here regularly... like 10 plus times a month. I have had this machete for 5 years and it is absolutely bullet proof. My original was stolen and hence this purchase. The blade is carbon steel and takes and holds an edge quite well. I don't head into the jungle without it. I have bought Colemans, Ontarios, Gerbers, some over priced wooden-handled English job, but nothing comes close to this thing. The Ontario is a fine tool. It's a great blade but too heavy for my purposes... Good for heavier brush and thick saplings... Not so good for the light, fast growing stuff you find in the jungle.

The Corona is not something pretty to look at. It is a utilitarian piece of equipment that is designed to be functional and long lasting. The handle is extruded plastic but of good size and it's securely riveted front and back. You drop the thing and the red handle ends ensure you'll find it. The tang goes to the back of the handle providing stability. I made a lanyard using pre drilled hole in the back of the handle. I suggest using one for any type of use - on this or any other machete.

If I have a beef with this machete, it's with the edge when first purchased. Sloppy grinder work. You will spend a little time with a file and hone developing an edge. Once you get your angles in place, the carbon steel blade gets razor sharp and holds it's edge for a remarkable period of time. I have accidentally hit stone with it on numerous occasions and the damage is minimal. A few swipes with a sharpening stone at the end of the day and it's literally sharp enough to shave with.

It's kind of scary looking at Saipan on google maps. You live in the absolute middle of nowhere. Proper Waterworld shit. What do you do there?

tramontina

The best machete I’ve used in a long time is the Schrade Priscilla. It’s blade heavy and thin enough to be an amazing chopper, while still being light and maneuverable enough for brush. Not to mention it’s about the only swordchete that I’ve handled and would argue to actually be a short sword. Then again I’ve yet to get my hands on a kingfisher machete.

I have heard issues of some warping and twisting of the grind if it’s used a lot for chopping. I’ve yet to have this problem, but typically I don’t use it on branches thicker than 3-4ish inches.

It’s only $30ish, but I wish they made a more expensive version with a better steel and some minor improvements.

>kingfisher machete
I like that.... Most dont have sheaths and the ones that do are either really cheaply made or real expensive thick leather.

yep, the shrade parang machete is a solid fucking package. it isn't a true machete, really more of a huge knife or short sword. if the sheath didn't have the "wings" and instead had a molle multi position belt clip on the back it'd be perfect.

Get a tramontina or an imacasa.

Ontario 18" D-handle.

Nice.

It’s almost too easy to grab my attention.
