Why aren't 16" .308 guns more popular? You lose about 100 fps, or 5% velocity, over a 20" barrel. It's a complete nothing burger, but you gain so much in portability.
Why aren't 16" .308 guns more popular? You lose about 100 fps, or 5% velocity, over a 20" barrel...
16"? Why stop there? Such an arbitrary number.
Because gay NFA laws and stuff.
Because it's FUCKING LOUD and kicks more.
They just don’t look right. Like a benis with the mushroom too much wider than the shaft.
I like my 18" but I often wonder if I'd like 16.5" better.
probably because a gunsmith or bubba can chop your 22 inch barrel down if you want it shorter.
16” .308 is really loud and concusive, not as bad as an AR pistol, but still annoying
The fucking retard is strong here. I can sense it.
>you gain so much in portability
No you don't.
There's virtually no reason to do so with a bolt action. A carbine length battle rifle might make sense if you could potentially be facing armored hostiles in close quarters, but a bolt-action is not suitable for such conditions. I can't see any reason not to get the optimum length in a precision rifle. Portability isn't a good enough trade for range, flatness, and power unless you glow in the dark and need to assassinate someone and then hide yourself and your gun in a crowd.
Yes, you do.
Wow
20" is already too short: for a 308 bolt gun you want 22 at least, preferably 26
Who cares about the portability of a deer rifle when slings exist? Are you keeping it in your trunk or something?
glow in the darks shoot people from hiding spots like the DC sniper
>26
Ya, for varmint hunting I guess. Try taking white tail with that and see what happens (or doesn't happen)
It's actually not at all arbitrary. For most loads, .308 starts losing velocity far more rapidly beyond 16 inches. It's about as short as you can go without starting to make serious sacrifices in cartridge efficiency
Here ya go. I went with 22".
EEEEEEEE
Why? Longer barrel length only gives you maximum range through velocity. 26" 308 guns touch 1100 yards and 20" is suitable for 800
Daily reminder that a longer or shorter barrel has no effect on accuracy
because you dont need to go clearing rooms with a bolt action rifle?
At longer ranges it does. Higher velocity equals more momentum and less drop, which equals less variation in drop at longer ranges. Learn into distance shooting, faggot.
Glowniggers*
Daily reminder longer barrels are less mechanically accurate because assuming the same profile, a shorter barrel will be stiffer
Even more of a difference for windage as that has way more variation and is harder to account for. Ever shot in a canyon across two crosswinds going different directions?
>Not going with a 30 inch barrel
Ishiggydiggy
??? No.
Yeah but there are diminishing returns to stiffness. A 26" target barrel is already stiff enough that additional weight will not significantly increase mechanical accuracy. Certainly not enough to outweigh the benefit of increased velocity in wind drift and drop variation. However if you're going for short-medium ranges and weight is a concern, a lightweight 18" barrel is still a great choice. I really don't like 16", you're at that point where you're starting to lose enough velocity that you notice, the kick and flash are more than is ideal, and it doesn't really handle any better than an 18". You're just wasting powder, and .308s are fairly expensive, especially match ammo.
>Win 147 gr fmj is at 5.56 level velocity with a projectile 3x the weight out of a 26" barrel
Shiiieettt
K11s and K31s make my pp hard. I am happy that I got an all matching K31 for $300 back in the day.
No it doesnt
Measured accuracy won't change. Extra velocity doesn't guarantee accuracy. Windage is still windage and you calculated it the same way when you also calculate for your barrel length.
1moa from a 20" barrel at 800 yards will be the same as 1moa from a 26"barrel at 1000 yards.
Any error you make in compensating for windage will show up on your target in proportion to the time the bullet spends in the air, and hence inverse proportion to the velocity of the bullet. If you can perfectly account for windage every time, even in gusty conditions with multiple crosswinds then good for you and enjoy your 16", but us mortals happen to benefit from longer barrels.
Learn to detect hyperbole my dude
You should see what handloaders are able to do with the 130gr all copper bullets.
>3000fps from a 20" barrel
Liberty animal instinct is closer to 3500
>nothing burger
>kekistan flag
stalking isnt even allowed in my state. such fun! sitting in a tree stand all day hoping a deer walks past. i'd rather be ice fishing; at least then i can be drunk
