Thoughts on the T-54/T-55?
Other urls found in this thread:
they made them in huge numbers, they were good tanks for their time, and they have hemispherical turrets
they were a bit too small, their ergonomics were iffy, and their crews needed more training though
Tank was fine.
based comrade
this. although many people complain about them being useless, people fail to put these vehicles in proper context. the T-54/55 series of tanks were quite literally WWII technology pushed to the limit and implemented into a vehicle that didn't need to be assembled in less than a day.
could they have been made during ww2?
Type 59 was better.
PRIVET
Althout all of the technological aspects of the T-54 were present in WWII, some design elements such as the removal of the bow machine gunner, removal of a large mantlet, etc. were lessons that WWII taught the soviets.
I'd say yes, it was possible to see a vehicle very similar to the T-54 on the WWII battlefield. The gun was already in use, the engine was in use in some form in the T-34, but the engine placement, turret and hull design weren't.
The T-55's technological advancements compared to the T-54 would put the T-55 outside of the time period of WWII though. NBC protection was only really becoming a thing after WWII, no matter what the French light tank designers say otherwise.
They have a credit bonus.
Here's the main difference between the T-54 (top) and T-55 (bottom). Before any underagefags start saying shit.
Here's the 1954 model STP-1 stabilizer at work. Most T-54 and T-55 tanks did not receive this stabilizer until well into the 50s, as it was developed as an upgrade and never implemented into manufacture until after 1958.
they are excellent for urban warfare due to their shorter barrels
At the Ft. Hood museum, there's a T-55 and a Type 59 very close to each other and you can easily eyeball the lower build quality of the Type 59.

T-55 tanks will still be showing up on battlefields for the next hundred years. The design was cheap, reliable, easy to manufacture on mass and easily up gradable. It is the tank of armys on a budget. I am almost sure that in a century copies of T-55s will be fighting wars on mars.
It was an adequate design and could hold it's own against anything NATO had until mid-60s. Relatively easy to produce and use. Reasonably good protection, mobility and firepower. Kinda bad ergonomics, but it wasn't as bad as the meme goes.
Arguably the best tanks in the world when they first came out, minus the usual shortcomings of the Soviet school of tank design. Remember, NATO's ubiquitous 105mm gun was the British reaction to discovering how well-protected these vehicles were.
The best part about these tanks is even morons can learn how to operate and maintain them.
Dependable, simple, armored enough to keep out everything not antitank and shooty enough to kill everything not armored. The choice of subhuman forces across the globe.
Really good at the turret toss
but really, it's not bad as an AFV, but the crew ergonomics are a joke.
Thing is it was made with 1930-1940 cohorts in mind, and those niggas were short for obvious reasons.
105mm was being tested before they got their hands on the T55... the T55 just guaranteed that the Brits would replace the 20pdr with the 105mm.
Ah yes, the Soviet Giant Purges of '33, who could forget.
never happened
Doubt it since the other side just has to fire some RPG at those obsolete tanks to turn them into scrap.
oh right sorry, tovarisch, must have been my imagination
So that's why the Chinese still have them in their inventory for so long...
even obsolete tanks are capable of using upgrades or tactics to allow them to survive in a modern environment
T-55s with ERA and night fighting equipment would be able to hold their own or even steam roll the opposition if they dont have modern AT weapons
tanks rarely operate alone, after all, and old tank is better than no tank

also bore evacuators
I like the appearance of the type 59's turret.
I was thinking of this exact picture.
the bore evacuator is not a feature to distinguish between 54 and 55. They were installed or retrofitted on T-54s and fitted on T-55 most of the time during manufacture. The lack of a dome on the turret is the only 100% reliable way to distinguish a russian, polish, german or czech T-55. chinks did their own thing of course.
