I would say get a PSA AR or a Maverick 88. The AR is a bit out of the suggested price range, but I'd save up a bit and make it happen.

300 dollars? Mav 88 for sure, I have one now that I've beat the shit out of, used to hunt deer, and it chills by the bedside, not my favorite gun, but useful, simple, and reliable. I feel like there are very few decent shtf guns that consistently fall in the sub 300 price range. If I didn't opt for Mav 88, I'd go for some 22 rifle with a hollow stock.

As someone who owns that exact firearm.... don't. Not only is the cheekweld shit, but if you actually lay your jaw on the stock and you're firing anything but light target loads it will bruise the fuck out of your face. Plus the stock itself is flimsy as shit and probably would quickly break if you really has to use it as your only defense gun in a seriously rough scenario.
