What actually matters in a gun, to make it shootable by as many folks as possible, as well as possible:

things like good grips with pronounced palm swells, wide buttplates, and a great pair of sights, e.g. aperture or express, depending on what kind of gun it is.
>weight and balance-
there's a pointability you get with a sub-6 pound rifle, as anybody that has handled an M1 Carbine can attest.
>recoil handling:
Excessive recoil scares a lot of folks and makes them develop a serious flinch. While you and I enjoy shooting Mosins, the average normie does not due to the thin, short buttplate. A Mauser will handle a cartridge more powerful than that (7.92x57mm) with relative ease due to its tall, broad, and flat buttplate... as long as you're not firing from a seated position.

Of course, there concerns are secondary to cartridge choice, action choice, and reliability. But dear God, i see so many built ARs, AKs, poly 80s, and even retail guns fuck this up.

The AK is cooler and better in every way than the AR.

Military surplus is surplus for a reason--it's shit. It's usually not even CHEAP shit, better options have existed at the same and sometimes lower price point for all of human history.

Slavic weapons are designed to fulfill 1 single criterium: To be usable by sub-70-IQ malnourished conscripts. And they fail epically at that and everything else as well.

The AR is better than the AK for civilian use.
This is coming from somebody that owns a WASR, loves it dearly, and has shot a fuckload of ARs.
Here's why:
The AR-15 recoils substantially less and in a more controllable manner- even 5.45 AKs have slightly harsher recoil due to the lack of a buffer.
The AR-15 fires a round that's available anywhere.

The AR-15 is substantially lighter when thoughtfully built. My AK weighs eight pounds with a tanker mag in, and I don't even have an optic on it yet.

The AR-15 shoots flatter.

The AR-15 Is more comfortable to use and use well thanks to a practically standard 6-position stock, a wide variety of custom grips, and a thinner handguard. With my AK, it's pretty much milsurp, Hogue (my choice), Magpul, or that one guy that makes custom wood grips for really large amounts of money.

The AR-15 has a wider variety of superior optics available for it, and it's easier to use those optics with it (hello chinweld!). While it lacks the ability to retain zero as easily as the AK siderail, that's a tertiary concern. And sure, you could put a railed dust cover, gas tube, or siderail mount on it, but then you lose zero every time you clean your gun or you've added *yet more* weight to your already fat AK.

The AR-15's stock irons are so vastly superior it's not even funny.

Basically, the reason I still own and use an AK is because I'm a hopeless contrarian that enjoys shooting strange guns, and I highly value the bulletproof reliability of my AK as a home defense gun, as well as not giving everybody in the house permanent hearing loss like I would with an AR-15.

The 455 is absolute shit, it's unironically worse than a Savage mk2 and costs as much as an entry-level Anschutz. The 452, which was actually good, was discontinued. The cheapest model of 527 costs more than a Winchester model 70 but has the fit and finish of a Zastava mini-mauser. The 550 cracks its stock left right and center because they decided aesthetics>structural integrity and but the crossbolt in exactly the wrong fucking spot. The 557 is literally a Remington 783 clone but costs more than an A bolt.

Part two to this rant: military use.
AK is better than AR if you've got a bunch of poorly educated soldiers that the gun is expected to outlive, or your country's military is full of conscripts. The stupid simple manual of arms and bulletproof reliability back this use case up well. And besides, they're conscripts- it's not like they'd hit anything with a friggen' match AR-15 anyways. Note that densely wooded areas such as Finland also benefit from the AK, as the cartridge is vastly superior to the 5.56 in brush deflection and light cover penetration- the other reason why my AK is my personal rifle, as I live in a densely forested state.

AR-15 Is better than AK if you've got professional soldiers for all the reasons listed in the last post, plus phenomenal accuracy as well as excellent stability in full-auto fire. If you're capable of keeping your gun clean and aiming at the target, the AR-15 will do it's part to ensure a hit far more frequently and quickly than the AK will, with its nasty accuracy, poor sights, and harsh recoil under F/A fire complicating the likelihood of getting a first, second, or third round hit before the other guy realizes where you are and fires back.
Part three, AK quirks that suck compared to the AR, coming up next.

Things the AK sucks at that I forgot to mention earlier:
- Reloading under pressure. Press button, jam new mag in, depress BHO is vastly superior to depress switch and knock mag out in one fluid motion, then either get it right the first time camming the mag in or dick about for 5-10 extra seconds finding the nub, finally getting it rocked in, then flipping the damn rifle over 90* or reaching between the mag and the sling to rack it.
- That damn fire selector, unless you have large hands.
- Accuracy, it's not going to be printing tiny groups the way a built AR can.
- Stock trigger. Oh *god* the stock trigger.
- Still has a cleaning rod in the year of our Lord 2019, adding 51 grams of dead weight, and you can't mount the sling without it unless you have a handguard with dickmod, MLOK, or some other way to mount the sling swivel.
- No way to reversibly convert to full-giggle like the AR that I'm aware of.

In comparison, AR quibbles:
- That fucking charging handle
- Lack of aesthetic magazine choices
- X grams of dead weight added by the forward assist button, AKA the "jam the shit out of it" button.
- The charging handle sight increments make no damn sense to me.

I don't really think the charging handle matters. Mostly, you don't need to fuck with it. I'm a lefty, and I don't even bother with the tacticool ambi handles. You use to charge the rifle when you first pick it up. If you're using it after that, you're wrong, or you have to mortar it. I do use the forward assist to close it after press checks by feel, like in the dark, but there's a number of people who scallop that divot in the bolt now. So it's irrelevant.

For most people that plate carrier and armor will be more of a hindrance in SHTF.

Actually they're both about equally as easy. You drill a hole, and drop in your FA trigger group. For the AR, you have to mill the shelf too, but meh. That's not exactly hard. Unless you're talking lightning link, in which case there is a mod that exists for that. And you can have a binary just buying a full auto disconnector and dropping it in next to the single.
