They also don't use rubber bullet, grenades and seldom any CS gas. Unlike France, they rely instead on water canons and deescalation. Apparently it works, yet French authorities keep telling us that without their explosive grenades, rubber bullets and CS, they'd have to resort to using real guns against protestors.

Btw, rubber bullets are supposed to be shot knee down and canon lower than shoulder height. Really makes you wonder how those shots to the head happen.

Forgot the tactics too: guys in armour do regular riot shit, guys with guns shoot innocent protesters and the guys without armour would hide behind the shields then break out and grab protesters who were known as instigators

US LEO here, I've worked on my agencies (one of the largest in the country) protest team for a while. We very rarely brought out shields because most crowds aren't violent or throw stuff, and they're actually more likely to do so if you're wearing all sorts of riot gear and shields.
Generally we have a squad fully geared up nearby and the shields in a trailer just in case things get bad.

I had the pleasure of watching footage of them at work in the early 1980s. I say pleasure, it was absolutely brutal and not a pleasant watch in the slightest.

Those are round shields for use with a baton. They are used in conjunction with the intermediate shield shown in You would have one full unit with the round moving forward driving protestors back and another unit with the intermediate providing cover when needed.
