From an air defense perspective, the US is porus AF with utterly non-existent land-based SAM capabilities and an Air Force that will be stretched past the breaking point trying to defend our massive border. It would be one thing if we had fighters/interceptors/missile emplacements on the scale that we did from 1960-1990, but we just aren't that country anymore, and it will be relatively easy for even someone like Russia or China to punch their way through the weak spots and start dropping munitions and greenberets into the areas controlled by the factions that they actually want to support.

Remember that the best air defense shield we have will be the USN, which just so happens to have an utterly non-existent anti-ship capability, meaning that in a defensive war where they're getting pushed up against their own coast, they're liable to get their shit pushed in by Russian/PLAN anti-ship capabilities. All it'll take is a carrier battle group going down and you'll see mass desertions/defections from the USN.

Remember that back then, the blue arrows were overwhelmingly white and similarly armed to what they were invading, and even then, the massively outnumbered south gave them a run for their money.

The Gulf states and West Coast will by the most stable, IMO the most viable candidates for independent states with California and Texas as the main actors. The Plains and Rockies are gonna be complete Afghanistan-tier tribal lawlessness, but still pretty stable compared to the meat grinder east of the Great Lakes.

That's not even getting into the fact that you can effectively cut the continent in half by blowing up a handful of key bridges and our infrastructure hasn't been adequately maintained in ~2 generations.

Besides, the US navy could definantly surround and blockade the Southern border. Honestly the West Coast would be a much more porous and likely place for foreign supplies and munitions to enter the country.

Ever seen the shitshow of traffic from people running from hurricans. Now imagine ever single city is like that once the food trucks stop showing up.

Gas would run out immediately and wouldn't be able to be ressupplied. So the exodus would be heavily stemmed due to them being on foot and running out of food and clean water after the first 3 days of walking on foot.

So they'd drink water from creeks or any water source where they'd start shitting their brains out making them lose nutrients even faster. Also scavenging and theft would play a part too. Munitions and gun factories may exist in some blue states(some) but the resources to run them may not be, and trucks carrying essential explosive components or ammo would be the biggest target of convoys.
