The story from the game is arguably really bad and shallow to begin with. However the lore is pretty decent. People who play the game are playing for ALL THE CUTE GIRLS and the memes. The anime is made to cater to that, nothing more, nothing less.
I don't think it would translate well if it was "super gritty".

There's also an official manga that focuses on the game story and it's looking pretty good so far.
