Was not focusing on Africa a NATO blunder in the cold war? Since you guys love Rhodesia so much I was looking into the continent at the time and it seems like going against colonial powers like Portugal was a mistake.

No, not really. Even if the whole continent was deep soviet red it wouldn't matter much, since whether aligned with east or west, the whole continent doesn't amount to much.

In what way?
Colonies just weren't worth the money it took to keep them running, and the public at home for many of them were starting to take a negative stance against them. Its actually surprising countries like Portugal tried to hang on to it for as long as they did.

I disagree, the amount of resources and the region would have been a great asset if turned into western nations. Colonialism was on its way out but we would be able to fight wars against communism that didn't have the weight of china and the soviet unions power on them like Vietnam did. While still containing the red tide to the east

posting this to help the discussion

Its easier/cheaper to have state backed corporations extract resources from former colonies than it is to run a government, with all the shit that entails.
And in the end, communism didn't need us keeping a stranglehold on Africa, it collapsed of its own weight.
Politically, it was nonviable. Maybe if colonial powers started decolonization in the 30's with genuine intent to create a functional independent state that could act as a close ally in the region, like how the US gave the Philippines independence we might have a more western friendly Africa, but hindsight is 20/20.

Not sure about loving Rhodesia, but you must admit it'd have been a better alternative to kleptocrat run Zimbabwe. Self-procalimed Commies will literally steal the fillings out of your teeth to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle at the expense of the nation.

RIP SATO

Friedrich-Wilhelm von Mellenthin, 55, Generalmajor a. D., former Chief operations in the Staff of Rommel, recommended for the southern Africa an Organisation, after the template of Nato aufgezogen and was to be named SATO
(Southern Africa
Treaty Organization).
As members Mellenthin proposed the Suidafrikan Union, Southwest-Afrika, Rhodesia aswell as the portugiese territories of Mozambique und Angola.

Give me some time and ill find the video.

I would like to know more

There is the video. it should have sub. I have the time tag at the part where they start talking about von Mellenthin and lead into SATO. The Interview is about Kongo Müller a merc in the Congo, Chief of Commando 52. youtu.be/NB9gyyVrbxk?t=1357

this looks like a great video

If you want contemporary merc insight its one of the best i found.

so is he a super war criminal or what?

Thats what he was hyped up by the socialist, pro kaffer west german media. In reality he was just a security employee under Hoare in the Congo.

Makes sense

Why a brazilian is guarding his own favella with a blue helmet?

That's in Haiti.

literally all NATO strategy in Africa was counter to NATO objectives. our actions there make no sense

Same shit

That's what I realized, why? A strong NATO Africa had to have been more beneficial than the alternative. Maybe they were using Africa to see how the reds influenced countries? idk.
