The Planes That Fought

Let's have a thread about the last two fighters that had a honest-to-god real, symmetrical air war and are used and trusted to this day: The F-4 Phantom and the MIG-21.

The f-35 beats them both.

Reminder that the Chinese J-7, a licensed copy of the early MiG-21s with upgraded avionics was in production until 2013.

Thanks user, been trying to find a higher quality version of the one I've been forced to listen to for a couple of months now.

I prefer 1989 version by Letov.

And why not, both of them carry a payload, go fast and high, and can fit modern radar. That's what makes them timeless.

It's an interceptor in a time where interceptors have little utility.

That's straight up wrong. The MIG-31 is still a thing for a reason. If you are referring to them being useless against bombers - wrong, you can't have that much ground-based coverage.

If you are referring to them being useless against F-15s/SU-27s (and similar) - you are wrong again, interceptors are the safest way to missile dump.

Once again i walk a foreign ground
Fastening my pressure helmet round
"Phantom" mine as rapid falcon
Into blue skies pure as talcum
Onwards climbs again with a roaring sound

With a crimson stripe the skies impaled
I see MiG-17 short on my tail
Bob and Richard, saw them falling
Their coffins were them calling
"Phantom" mine from altitude derailed

For too long at home i have not been
Someone else caresses my wife's skin
In Vietnam we fight our battle
All against the slant-eyed cattle
This war was not designed for us to win

Yet i crawl along black scorched down earth
I'm too young and dying young is ill
Mothers all will pray around
Hitting foreheads upon ground
Yet again i'm being forced to kill

At interrogation through my cough
Did i only ask: "Who knocked me off?"
Squint in charge of the affair
Sitting right in front my chair
Answered: "Our pilot Lee See Tsin"

You are filthy liar, slant-eyed pig!
In my helmet plainly did i dig:
"Petro, cover me around!
Ivan, press the "Phantom" down!"
Soviet ace was one who knocked me off

My home Texas somewhere far away
There my mom and dad are living by
"Phantom" mine as slained beast
On the ground lies deceased
And together we shall never fly

I don't know as comparing F4 v MiG21 combat in Vietnam is all the telling given the Americans were required to get VID per the ROI. In a proper conflict the F4's would have been slinging Sparrows well before the merge.

The Phantom still had a 3:1 K/D ratio even with those limitations.

Fuck me I loved these books as a kid

So fucking aesthetic

Wouldn't the MiG-23 be closer in capability's to the F-4

>Those wings
Yessssssssssss

In a perfect world, the Soviets would have invested more in video recording combat encounters with thier jets
There isn't alot of footage of the mig 21, which is weird to me since migs where mass-produced alot.
Best I can find is old air shows and a few clips of of migs testing thier AA missiles on unmanned aircraft.

MIG-23s are considered an F-16/MIG-29 peer. In fact, superior to the latter. So no, it outclasses both the MIG-21 and the F-4 by a wide margin.

>The Phantom still had a 3:1 K/D ratio even with those limitations.

Prove it. MIG-19s took down Phantoms routinely.

>MiG-23 considered superior to the MiG-29
By who, and what kind of drugs are they on?

Must be some sort of super krokodil.

MiG-23 kills you (the pilot, not the enemy) if:
- you do more than 8Gs (bolts holding the wings in place shear without warning)
- you try landing on a typical soviet strip and the planets aren't perfectly aligned to the galactic center
It does one thing right though - kills belgians...well one of them at least.

Western supplied air forces tend to credit most of their planes lost in air combat as lost to SAM's. Gotta maintain image of more proficient pilots.

In terms of weapons system and flight performance. The joke is that with MiG-23 you can either fly well or fight well, but not at the same time due to pilot being overloaded with managing weapon systems and flying not that easy to fly aircraft. That was kinda big problem and got MiG-23 pilots killed in combat. Phantom was supposed to be a single seat fighter, but due to complexity of weapons system they had to add second guy to operate radar. The late MiG-23MLD model, that was produced from 1982 to 85, fixed both avionics issues and handling issues, but that was soon replaced by MiG-29 on production lines.

That is test bed for Tu-144's wing design.

Are you high?
I am pretty sure the Iran-Iraq War and the 6 Days War fits better.
