In most states if you want to carry one around others you'll need a concealed carry permit. But in my state we have constitutional carry which basically means SHALL.

Historically, most people who got into guns received some kind of instruction on gun safety from their fathers at home, or else in school, scouts, etc.; wherever they got into guns. The scenario where someone gets interested in guns, buys one, and goes shooting while having no more-or-less knowledgeable gun people in any sort of mentoring role is quite prevalent with the rise of vidya and youtube, but was a pretty small fraction historically.
Whether that has caused a recent increase in gun accidents, I couldn't say -- after all, youtube also makes gun safety information easily accessible if you want it. Be interesting to try to find statistics to find out, but all gun-related statistics in the US are so heavy politicized I doubt you could find trustworthy statistics to allow a good comparison.
I don't get the autism over the expectation that you can safely handle a weapon in public. It's your right to own weapons for sure, but if you're a dipshit who can't handle the responsibility that comes with owning weapons it I don't see why you shouldn't have your rights stripped.
Gun safety is (or was) a cultural thing for us in America.
The frontier living and westward expansion into an untamed land meant guns were a fact of life for a large majority of people here.
Learning to respect the lethality of firearms and how to handle them in a safe and responsible manner was almost like a rite of passage, particularly for boys.
Ages vary, but lots of boys as young as 10 years old or many times younger were expected to help provide food by hunting and to be counted on in defense of the homestead.
Thus gun safety was a family affair, father to son, and passed down through generations.
It worked pretty well for a long time but the disintegration of the two parent household has disrupted that and many other things.
Just make firearm safety courses a mandatory part of the HS curriculum. It's a one-day course here in Canuckistan and half of that is just the various legal shit. ACTS & PROVE are all you really need 99% of the time.

TST is indeed mostly edgy anti-Christian young people. They were usually raised in heavily Christian environments and grew up with a sour taste for organized religion and specifically Christian churches in this country. They do little meme fire baptisms and stuff but it's on the level of high schoolers that start dressing like some music subculture and tell their parents to fuck off. There are parts of this country where things are controlled by Christians, especially organized groups like the Southern Baptists or Mormons. The churches get to make the rules (about stuff like homosexuality and abortion other social legislation) and then start flipping out about freedom of religion when their rule is challenged in any way. TST is edgelords who try to push buttons for that reason. They do 'rituals' that mostly involve pyrotechnics followed by heavy drinking and love yelling 'hail satan 666 lol' because they like getting reactions out of super conservative people and getting to do the atheist gloat thing. I didn't have my feefees hurt by Christianity to actively partake in their activities around here, but my friends tell me about the stuff they do and it's usually entertaining.
A lot of public elementary schools around here have religious education books, so TST is trying to get these books put into school. The book itself is just luzly edgy harmless about sharing and tolerance and other kid lessons, it isn't anti-Christian at all. The challenge being proposed is: does freedom of religion only apply to Christianity? Will the schools accept this book or eliminate their current books? They shouldn't do the latter, they should just stock this book the same way they do everything if it's provided by a religious organization. Sometimes in these cases though, they'll remove their Christian propaganda from public spaces and say it's a war on Christianity, when it's really just testing if Christians will share the freedom.
