What vehicle is this? It was seen among Merkavas yesterday at the Gaza strip border. It looks like a turretless Merkava, but I thought Merkavas could act as IFVs on their own.

Here's a pic of it among the Merkavas, the vehicle just behind them.

Namer APC

The space is super tiny. Not practical to transport soldiers at all.

i guess take out the basket and you've got some space. i remember seeing on the military channel or something a long time ago that merkavas had space for like 4 infantry?

If the ammunition racks are removed.

So it's just a headless Merkava

Basically.

Good shit, if you're Israel and you don't have to worry about overseas deployment.

Pos':
>heavy armor
>carries a full infantry squad and all their gear
>fast enough to keep up with Merkavas on the advance
Negs:
>heavy
>big
>"only" armed with HMG, for now

Notice that 2 of the negatives pretty much don't matter to Israel, since all of their important fights will happen near their own borders.

>>"only" armed with HMG, for now
Not for long.

Looks like a merk,sans turret.

one of the neat things about that turret is that it's entirely self-contained; there's no bit that goes into the hull aside from the cables that connect it to power and the controls. so unlike the bradley's turret for example it doesn't hog a ton of room that could have been used for carrying more grunts

how the fuck do you even make a mbt that is also troop transport at the same time?

Merkava MBT has never really been used as a troop transport much despite the concept being touted. Apparently modern Merkava crews put spare MG ammo and spare parts in the troop carrying compartments

The IDF is currently upgrading Namer's to have unmanned turret with 25mm Cannon and 4 Spike ATGM's. Plus Trophy APS.

Checked

That's not the Merkava.

>No main gun

This is obviously not a fucking Merkava

that's an interior of a Namer

The troop compartment of a Merkava can be seen in the back here.

The Merkava "troop compartment" is sometimes overstated. If pic related is truly how it is then it is clearly more of an emergency thing where the crew has less ammo loaded (or ditches some) and allows a few troops cover during a firefighter or a quick way to evacuate pinned/wounded soldiers.

The US trialed the Namer. It's a nice APC, but it's too big for anyone who would have to worry about transporting it on ships or planes. Works for Israel because they can truck it to wherever it's needed.
