Excuse me? It's not rusty at all. I sanded it down until the rust was gone. The black stuff is a patina. The only discoloration that's on the blade is caused by me using raw linseed oil to prevent it from rusting. Raw, I must stress, as boiled has lead, cobalt, etc.

An example of how linseed oil looks on metal can be found on munitions grade plate armor back during the 1600s. They're very brown/green as linseed oil oxidizes and turns a gunky looking color.
It wasn't actually in any paper at all. It was tucked in the bottom drawer of a 110 year old house. It barely could be considered a knife when I found it. Utterly covered in rust. I used electrolysis to get rid of 99% of it and sanded the rest.

Update after some quick research. The mark is really faded but there's apparently a cult following for this brand and some people over on some kitchen knife forums have some posts about the different marks. It looks to be early 50s.
