The one good thing about living in West Virginia is that there's so many kinds of trees. Hickory, oak, maple, pine, ceder, juniper, osage orange, walnut, etc, etc. Perfectly in the middle to have it all. Can Missouri compete? As a woodworker this is very important to me.

I assure you there is more "osage orange" (we just call them hedge trees) in MO than in WV.

The lumber from them is great and extremely strong, dense and beautiful but most of it is too gnarly to be used for anything but firewood. BTW it's also the best firewood.

I use it for bows and tool handles. It takes a lot of work finding any usable length as you say it's usually incredibly twisted, knotty, or has some other major problems. Looking it up, Missouri also has plenty of hickory, sometimes shagbark, and walnut occasionally. Dogwood out the wazoo too.
