If your right to protection stops at your door step, it's as good as telling you that you haven't got it to begin with. So compared to an American state your home defense laws extend to your car and transporting to places. It makes sense if private property tells you that they don't want you to be armed there that's not really the governments business, but in public it's extended to your destination from your door step.
This sort of law is just for home owners, it's probably some good ol' boys club trying to bend the rules so you can buy a firearm if you're a rich criminal where you were going to have it illegally anyway. Actually you can own a gun even if you are renting, and to be honest this is not a law for rich landowners, it's more of a law for countryside people since most people in the country own their house compared to the city. It is basically removing the concept of proportionality in self defence (as insane as that might sound that it actually existed) so if the asshole is threating you, you can shoot the motherfucker and that's it.
