At best it's a way to get yourself pulled onto a database or watch list, at worst you become the first casualties in some mythical SHTF scenario. If you read early 20th century authors like John Dos Passos, you can see that this wasn't always true. The USA Trilogy is a good glimpse into the fact that they did exist, and they were out there, but pressures from the world wars and the media stamped them out.
Henry George, for example, wasn't a typical Marxist but had a fairly left-wing ideology that was incredibly popular among the working class in the late 1800s. There were entire groups of people who got so into his book Progress and Poverty that they abandoned their lives to go larp about it in communes, including Leo Tolstoy. There are other examples too. Why do you think labor agitation was such a big threat that the Pinkertons needed to exist?
These aspects of history aren't taught to Americans, and anyone bringing them up is derided as an extremist. Why do you think that is?
