lower muzzle velocity and the muzzle blast being close to your fingers if they slip forward, as well as a bigger flash, but those are really the main downsides

The barrel is the most expensive part of the gun to make and then you have to join them together in such a way that they hit the same spot. Shouldn't be that surprising, user. For 12 gauge, the sweet spot is between 12 and 18 inches. Any longer and you won't improve the performance much at all.
