That is an Imbel receiver which is top notch. A l1a1 sporter like that goes for 650-900 right now. You can use that receiver to make any FAL you want as its better than what DSA is cranking out right now. DSA are good smiths and can/will assemble any barrel/lower you want on a gun like that.

Depends. Some mounts/configs will still let you use the irons. In that case I'd get something with some decent magnification, maybe fixed power, depending on how accurately it's shooting. Otherwise, I'd probably go for a 1-8x variable or something. Unless you're intent on overhauling the rifle into a modern/tactical kind of thing, I'd avoid putting an RDS or whatever on it. The irons are pretty good.

They are heavy as fuck, and there are better options available these days. Unless you like to build and collect .mil clones this should be a pass. Military didn't use these because they were excellent, they has a bunch of M14 available and it was a quick and easy way to get a DMR into the field, which was sorely needed in Iraq/Afghanistan. A stopgap until they could procure and issue a real DMR.

Well that changes a lot user. If you can't have scary salt rifles then it becomes a more viable option. Just get a regular wood or synthetic stock M1A. If you can't have the pistol grip and collapsible stock not much of a reason to go with the SAGE chassis, just adding weight.

Could get the 16" SOCOM model and still be tacticool.

Get a regular M14 and get it bedded. The platform isn't inherently heavier than other BRs given the same barrel length, it's just that stupid chassis. Also on regular stocks the metal buttplate accounts for a ton of weight, so you could even go aftermarket fiberglass/rubber and get an 18" under 8 lbs. Also it's more accurate than FAL/PTR with minor ($100-200) modifications. Ignore all the hate, they're good rifles, and even if the AR-10 performs better than M14 for the same price, M14 has soul, and you can larp as that guy from full metal jacket. Or any soldier in Vietnam.

Kind of defeats the purpose of M14 as a marksman rifle IMO. Too front-heavy to ever be room-clearing tactical. At that point he should just build an AR-10 with whatever gay cuck features he needs (or not).
