Guns are a fetish object that channel energy away from attaining real political power and convert it into profits for weapons manufacturers. At this point in time and into the near future there are hundreds of causes better fought for without violence (actually almost all of them regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum). The other option is to move to a looser conception of the United States where the federal government has less power - to which degree is up to how deep the differences run. We need only revert back to a previous understanding of state vs federal power. I'd much prefer that to being forced to pick up my gun and be curb stomped by law enforcement/national guard as neighbors turn on neighbors and we are balkanized by fire. I want to live my full life and I have family and friends I dont want to see hurt - that's all really. And yes, if that's threatened I have defensive arms.

There's too much money and power to be gained by a politician at the federal level now for them to give that up.
Progressives have also made it a large part of their party platform to have a strong federal government and to move that up the ladder to multinational unions like the EU.
Their excuse for wanting such unions and ultimately one global political system is global warming.
The progressive is willing to throw away any and all individual liberty in the name of perceived safety, and to them sovereignty is a threat to their safety utopia.

You are probably right as long as some black swan event doesn't occur. But its not absolutely impossible - a groundswell of forceful popular demand for such rollbacks in many states, with corresponding elections of leaders at multiple levels could turn the tide.

The main point of our disagreement here - is that I think many of our most serious problems can't be dealt with without effective leadership at the federal level. To be transparent with you - I'm a liberal on most issues - hence I see widening economic disparities, environmental preservation, and corporate greed as fundamental problems that will be difficult to address purely at a local level. And I disagree that global warming is just an excuse (though considering how psychopathic those who desire power are I dont doubt many of them only pledge when they see direct benefits to be gained). I'm on board with the understanding that government is a sort of "evil" ripe for abuse, even if I consider it widely necessary - many liberals skirt around this idea and are uncomfortable to state it directly - but they will inadvertently acknowledge it when complaining about state capture by corporate interests, NSA etc.
