Can someone give me objective critique on why a 12g p90 style top fed 'combat' shotgun would not work?

The only issue I could see would be the shell rims, otherwise sounds like a decent idea, although the good capacity mags would be massive.
Yes, I could see the easy change of cartridge as main drawback for breaching etc
Because FN will sue your ass.
That Magazine is sick, bro
this
Their copyright expired a while ago.
It's just the ammo used in top fed mags has to be pretty straight and has relatively tight tolerances compared to normal mags.
Why are there no cartridgeless shotguns yet tho
One mag for the explosive load and one full of the lead balls, that'd be much more space saving
How do they still have a patent? This is ridiculous. They invented it back in the 90's. It's been more than 20 years at this point.
....10mm anyone? It'd have to be roller delayed blowback or someshit, but I'd buy the fuck out of one.
>One mag for the explosive load and one full of the lead balls
That existed in the early 1800's.
Educate yourself.
Yeah, rims are a problem.
I wonder how long it will be before someone comes up with a rimless shotshell cartridge that sticks around? IIRC there was a company who made some 12ga rounds with plastic "cartridges" with rebated rims and there was a matching AR mattern shotgun which used them, though they are no longer in production.
don't most breachers use a dedicated breaching weapon first then drop it to use a different weapon? that complaint sounds like it's limited to a very very small number of cases.
Actually, since the rounds rotate as they come down, the rims won't be a problem right? Since they don't line up with each other when they feed
Nobody is going to bother with rimless. I would love it if it had become standard but given the use of shotguns today, it's pointless and nobody has any real interest
Plus the 5.7 cases are lubed and much harder than plastic hills which helps in feeding through the rotation A LOT.
only works in my dreams
the rims are a problem in the main section of the magazine, before they are rotated.
That's my take on it too. There are just so many options which work right now that there's not enough reason to change.
>Plus the 5.7 cases are lubed and much harder than plastic hills which helps in feeding through the rotation A LOT.
I thought the lube was for extraction?
And the ribbed texture on most plastic hulls serves to reduce friction in a similar manner to lubricant.
Work for combat? Or mechanically work?
Aside from the rims, your biggest problem would likely be the deformation of the plastic hulls in the spiral. The rounds pinch eachother at the middle when being rotated, and the plastic hulls might deform and cause feeding issues when left under spring tension.
Otherwise, the patent is long expired, so go crazy. I'd go for 30 carbine instead though. Straight walled cartridge, no rim, can still use a blowback action, and cheaper than 5.7 but with more energy.
>why a 12g p90 style top fed 'combat' shotgun would not work?
Because if somebody tried to make one, fagpul would buy them out to eliminate competition, and cancel the project.
>I thought the lube was for extraction?
Yeah pretty sure it is. I was reading reloading forums about 5.7 and they never mentioned feeding issues, only extraction issues when the lacquer wore off.
Internal grooves to hold rims and prevent overlapping.
I thought you were holding a ribbed dildo at first glance
Why fuck with some thing thats already reliable
With the width, almost would be better off slapping them on each side with selectable or alternating feed.
Balance issue is present either way, allows for less HOB.
I'm not sure how that would help. I've owned firearms with grooves like you describe in their mags and those grooves themselves tend to cause problems. The grooves have to be a little bigger than the thickness of the rim in order to allow for manufacturing tolerances of both the mags and the ammo....and that causes jams when you have ammo that's a little thinner than normal. Not to mention the gooves trap dirt inside the mag.
Why specifically in top fed mags? Feed orientation doesn't seem like it would make a difference as long as it's from a box. I could see the P90 style mag working just as well for a side feed mag like a super-modern Sten.
From what I understand, the Hill SMG had an armature in the gun that turned the bullets to feed, rather than a ramp in the magazine doing it.
One thing the turning feed ramp does do for rimmed cartridges is that it eliminates the problem of rim lock.
I love how the prototype uses a mp40 barrel
Didn't colt originally conceive the concept in the 50s?
