How do I get into hunting? I've never been hunting before in my life, no one in my family has hunted. Like most of us I'm also a loser with no friends. It's something I've really wanted to get into but I have no idea how. My state is Minnesota. I think starting off with small game would be a good idea but apparently the season ended in February. It's amazing to think that bunny cops would take my gun and fine me for shooting a damn squirrel in a state park. Coyotes are unprotected and legal to hunt year round without a license.

So do I literally just go onto public land and find a good spot near an open field? Is it that simple? Do I need a reason to kill one like meat/pelts/etc or is population control enough?

pretty much
>Do I need a reason to kill one
when it comes to deer, no. they're oversized rats

I have a PA hunting license and "hunt coyotes" but what I really do is larp in the woods on state game lands, a license gives me access year round 24/7 and I can carry a semi auto, the only reason i got it was to avoid any poaching or other issues should I encounter a game warden.
Truth is hunting lands are basically deserted outside the big seasons.

1) Find out all about licences and laws related to your area.

2) Get a good hunting weapon, be realistic and on the safe side (no cheap .22 for large animals).

3) Read about local animals, their anatomy (shot placement is important) and how to dress them.

4) Read about cooking! It's as important as the hunting part :)

thanks user
seems comfy user, what do you do out there?
my 10/22 would be perfect if it was small game season. Was thinking of getting an SKS and putting a scope on it for coyotes. I wish I lived in Texas, hogs seem a lot more simple.

Fuck this, just get a 300 WinMag and shot

I'm moving to Utah very soon and would also like to know more about what it takes to go from the only person in my family who likes guns to being able to go /out/ and hunt yotes or boars as a start

>I wish I lived in Texas, hogs seem a lot more simple.
Some land owners are just as retarded about their rules for hunting hogs as state laws are for hunting other game animals. Bag limits, caliber restrictions etc.

Because they want the hogs to stay, not to eradicate them. They use them and charge hunters for the experience.

hey PA user, also PAfag here. I've been trying to get into hunting as well, do I need to take that course or can I just pay my fee and get it over with licensing wise? also, can I harvest certain animals certain seasons? or does having a license give me free range to get whatever the fuck I want?

Buy a FoxPro and learn to hunt. It's not really as easy as finding public land and going and sitting on the edge of a field. There are plenty of videos available online to help.

Coyote hunting is a good way to learn to hunt.

Take a state hunter education course. Many can be done online. Depending on your knowledge level, you may learn more about firearms and the game you want to hunt.

Wired to hunt podcast and Steve Rinella are great resources for beginners. Pre season scouting is a huge determinant of success. Go where the game is and learn the sign associated with them.

Read through your state's game manual for rules, regulations, allowable equipment, and dates.

I recommend squirrel hunting for a beginner. They are easy to find and taste good. It will help you get into the mindset of a hunter and help teach how to find, kill, field dress, and cook game.

Dont listen to this guy on the deer part, you dont need a reason, but you have to buy a tag to hunt specific animals. DO NOT GO HUNTING DEER WITHOUT A TAG, YOU WILL BE FINED FOR POACHING AND LOOSE THE ABILITY TO HUNT FOR YEARS
as for hunting small game, if you have a backyard and an air rifle, then you can probably get away with shooting a squirrel unless you're caught, which is unlikely and the neighbors probably dont even care

you can take a hunters safety course. if you're a noob i recomend doing it. i dont know if its neccesary past 18 though.

This. TX is probably the shittiest state to hunt in unless you're a richfag. Everything is private here.

For the hand full of states I've hunted in it's been required if you were born after a certain date (Usually sometime in the 70s). Obviously it's different for different states hence the importance of knowing the local regulations.

Don't do it online if you don't know anyone that hunts. In person you can talk to the instructors or even other attendees parents after class and they'll probably be happy to point you in the right direction about where to go.

Hello fellow PAfags. The hunter/trapper safety course is required to get a hunting license. It's a couple hours long and then you take a short test which is really easy, even if you slept through the entire course.

you need to take the hunter education course but it's online now too and you don't pay until you pass, you cant actually fail it.

Thank you anons. I may just sign up for one and take it from there then. Thank you

You best get your states Hunting Regulations handbook for this year, and study it.
Get a license.
In NC we have lots of "game lands".

>and how to dress them.
Oh yea, this.
Have that already planned out before the kill.

>do I need to take that course
consider it, and in a class where you meet other people.

>Was thinking of getting an SKS and putting a scope on it for coyotes.
do not bubba an sks. get a rifle that wont suck for the job and lose its value on upgrades. AR15 or WASR AK if you want an auto loader for example.
> I wish I lived in Texas, hogs seem a lot more simple.
you have to lease land in texas to hunt if you dont own any.

Well let me tell you, you're probably gonna hate it if you cant sit quiet for hours cold as fuck.

If you want coyotes though you can bait them in, I usually get a rotisserie chicken and let it sit in my garage for 2 or 3 days, then I half bury that snelly cock sucker at the bottom of a hill in the woods near my house. Move about 75/100 yards up the hill then wait. Best time (In my area that is) Is right around sundown, but my buddy hunts the property in the morning with good results.

Also after you nail your first one, you can hang it's carcass from a tree as bait, shoot, repeat.

>Do I need a reason to kill one like meat/pelts/etc or is population control enough?

If it's unprotected, no, but you need to check to see if you need a hunting license. I doubt you need tags for a coyote but you might.

user, try getting over your social anxiety and go ask someone at a local gun store and just say you don't know anyone into hunting and if they had advice on how to get into hunting in your state.

Jesus Christ that wound cavity.

Poor people without family heritage have no business with hunting.

Don’t shoot guns in a Mn state park. It will end badly for you. I would recommend checking out the state walk in hunting areas around Hutchinson, or Marshall, pheasant hunting is a blast.

Also, you can hunt deer with an old Buick in Duluth. They are worse then rats.
