To be fair, the system works slightly differently here. You'll be arrested if you kill someone under almost any civilian circumstances. Self-defence is a DEFENCE, i.e. you can use it in court to not go to jail. With this in mind, the CPS will almost certainly not want to go to trial if there's a good chance of you beating the rap (because it's a waste of time). The police still have to arrest you to start that process off.
