Magazine Tube Removal

Anybody got any methods for removing a Mossberg 500 magazine tube? I'm trying to install pic related and having a hell of a time getting the tube out.

Jesus Christ you retard stop!

You don't need to REMOVE the mag tube to install that.
The mag tubes on mossy500s are glued in place and you're not supposed to remove them.

Just take the cap off the mag tube, pull the spring out and shake the follower out!

590s have removable end caps, 500s don't.

WTF are you talking about?

You have a barrel nut at the end of the magazine that unscrews, yes?

Remove that.

Now you can see into the magazine tube.
Is there a spring in there? It should be. Pull it out.
Proceed to shake out the follower.

I suppose some 500s might have spring clips retaining the magazine spring, but that should be easy to remove out the front of the magazine tube.

DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE MAGAZINE TUBE!

you dont know what a 500 is
to OP its either locktited or rusted on
try heat or penetrating oil

Propane torch to the receiver where the magazine tube meets the receiver, then channel locks on the tube, and roughly twist counter clockwise and pull.

OP here Thanks, I've been trying a heat gun for awhile but it hasn't done anything. I hadn't thought of rust being in the threads, that should help.

I used a heat gun on mine for about 15 minutes each side (see pic related). Then wrapped it in cloth and put it in a vice, and then I unscrewed the tube.

Did you notice any loctite bubbling out and then start twisting or did you just apply pressure the whole time?

you may want to try more heat if the oil doesnt work out. heat gun might not get it hot enough but a torch will

Heat gun is what you want. Failing that put it in the oven at about 250 for 10 minutes or so. A torch can work but you have to be really careful not to scorch it.

OP here, I've been using the heat gun for about twenty minutes, and once my timer went off I spent about five trying to twist the damn thing off. I've got nothing to show for it but a blister on my thumb. Thanks anyway though guys, I'll definitely try oil and more heat tomorrow. Until then I'll just let the new follower sit there and mock me.

let that oil sit overnight it will work better.
it must be penetrating oil not wd40 or whatever the fuck was laying around.

Oil won't help it's held in by thread locking compound. If the head gun didn't do then take it to a gunsmith. Don't try to wench the tube off cause it's thin and you'll crumple it.

>it's held in by thread locking compound
it depends on the age of the gun
if its used it could be rusted stuck which oil would loosen
or maybe its been removed before and x product was used during reassembly

attempting to use penetrating oil cant hurt.

Did you put it into a vice or something else that can hold the receiver?
If you are trying to twist it by holding the tube with one hand and receiver with the other hand, then it won't work.

OP here. I don't have a vice on hand, but I was using some rubber work gloves with really good friction.
And no, it's not used. I got it new, but I think it might have been at the store for a while.

Used my kitchen stove to heat mine up. Stuck receiver between legs and was able to get the tube off that way. No tools or vice.

Do you have a metal chair with a ladder back or something similar?
Lay the chair on the ground with the ladder back side up, slip the receiver between the gaps and twist the tube. Make you hold the chair to prevent it from moving while twisting the tube.

Nah, I think I'm going to try taking it to a gunsmith.

>You have a barrel nut at the end of the magazine that unscrews, yes?
There is no barrel nut on a 500; there is a barrel screw. You do not understand the difference between a 500 and a 590.

Gentle tapping in combination with the heat may help. Also, penetrating oil does wonders.

Receiver in vise, padded with something to protect the finish.
Heat gun (or torch, if you're carefull)
Plumber's strap wrench on the tube...that will let you put a lot of oomph on it without risk of damaging it.

I have that exact follower in my Maverick 88. I just paid my gunsmith $25 to do it. It Better than worrying about it myself. He said he used a heat gun to soften up the Loctite and then a strap wrench to get the magazine tube off.
