the country that still exists

it depends on how you define "winning".
the us claims they left in a stalemate. the vietnamese claimed they won. the truth is closer to the viets version. the us left and the communists took over all of vietnam. the war was essentially for naught.
today, they are fairly westernized with businesses and money from the us. we might have lost the actual war but the culture war is another issue.

wrong war

>the us
SINO-Vietnamese war. Into the corner you go.

China and Vietnam both still exist

tactical staleman, but the Chinese blundered into a strategic victory, ironically by seizing the means of production

The free world.

Welp..This is a cool Vietnamese-Chink war movie clip..

> didn't get Vietnam to back off Cambodia
> strategic victory = looting

seems like that covered some of their loses but idk if i would call that a strategic victory

Vietnam. The Chinese failed to accomplish their objectives during the war.

-The battered Vietnamese gave the Chinese a run for their money.
-China could not get Vietnam to withdraw from fighting the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia
>you be the judge

Viets and to those that try to make the case that Chinese won over minor gains the war forced major changes in the PLA. For one they started using the rank system again.

that's why I think the strategic Chinese victory was unintentional.
Vietnam couldn't maintain the Cambodian occupation, and Myanmar just fell back into the sino sphere of influence.
where as Vietnam lost its shot of being the powerhouse of SEA.
this is looking back into history, if this was happening as we speak, it would be impossible to call

Vietnam.
>still carried out their occupation of cambodia
>probably consolidated some of the ex-south vietnamese civilians into embracing the then-new unified vietnam regime
>removed khmer rouge, despite the chinks chimping out
>stayed there until the 1990s
>china just attacked and retreated
>had their military doctrines rewritten after fighting the vietnamese
>the lack of ncos and other seniority in PLA ranks fucked over those poor volunteers

To reiterate from the thread last night, China lost at least 7000 men in 3 weeks before giving up and failed to get Vietnam out of Cambodia. Seems like a defeat.

Strategic Chinese victory, Tactical Chinese defeat.

Strategic Vietnamese defeat, Tactical Vietnamese victory.

In the end, Vietnam lost their chance to become the top dog in the region and the relationship with the USSR was ruined forever, while their economy literally crashed.

For China, it was their achievement to eliminate a USSR-supported threat in their south, and gained favor with the Americans (who endorsed the invasion), which helped them to become the economic power they are today.

Also, unintentionally, China's secret alliance with Thailand began due to this war.

The US since it completely shattered Sino-Soviet relations

The Sino-Soviet split has long happened.

In fact, the Sino-Vietnam war was closely coordinated by Deng Xiaoping and Henry Kissinger, since it was in the interest of both to push out Soviet influence in South East Asia.

Yup. Funny how the US and Vietnam are now starting to realign against China.

Naturally, since the Big Bad of that time, the USSR, is no more.

China even got a bunch of pretty hightech (for that time) weapons and gear from the US. Such as these counter-artillery radars that were top of the line.

As well as night vision equipment and laser range finders/designators.

These were the first high tech weapons in China's arsenal back then and they used them to kickstart their own R&D from those.

>Two sides making dead commies.

The US won.

both sides declared victory

Of course. I just like the irony. That, and the idea of Vietnamese and Americans working together in the jungle again makes me hard.

Why the fuck would we give that to them? We knew that would just use that equipment to rip of their designs and jump start their own R&D?

probably didnt think they could at the time

The USSR was the greater evil at the time. Planners of the age saw China as a thorn in the Soviet’s side that could be used as leverage against Russian aggression. On top of that, China was beginning to liberalize after Mao’s death, and America thought that continued prosperity and stability would lead to a less authoritarian China.

Vietnam won the moral victory by stopping a genocide and cucking the Chinese at the same time

why don't you point at sinostan on the map then you idiot

everyone look at this fool and laugh

You’re retarded, learn your history.

By that metric, the US won in Vietnam too, dummy.

We're talking about Chink-on-Gook action
