Counter-sniper role, at least theoretically. Any decently trained sniper won't be taken out by a DMR but it gives the squad an illusion of safety.

suppressing fire is for suppression. it has a chance to kill but mostly you are shooting randomly in the general direction of the enemy.

the DM is there to take out visible high priority targets at the maximal possible distance. the machine gunner is there to suppress a target or remove cover as applicable.

most DMs use semi autos. only recon snipers are bound to use sniper rifles that are bolt action, but those are masterpiece weapons and regularly make 1/2 mile shots.

chinese one are better for civilian markets, the barre lhave been changed and chromed inside, you can't shoot coper coated steel case anymore because of the coper/chrome chemical reaction but you are not restrained to the 54r special snowflake ammo to make good grouping

The Tigr is a specifically made for the civilian market. I’ve seen two versions: one that cosmetically looks like a regular SVD but with a shortened barrel and another (more common) variant that has the short barrel + no birdcage + different grips and stock. I don’t know what the other differences are (if there are any).
Surprisingly smoother than what you’d expect for commie bloc stuff. I used to deer hunt with an M1A - ditched that years ago and now hunt with the SVD.

Both the russian and chinese SVDs have chrome lined barrels. I’ve used all kinds of ammo for it and never had any issues.
I’m not the original owner but from what I can tell it’s one of second wave of NDM-86’s that got imported in the late 80s/early 90s before the import ban took effect.

In all seriousness, if I had to wildly speculate the reasons why I would say:
1. the drag was designed by Yevgeny Dragunov. ‘SVD’ (roughly translated) is just an acronym for “Sniper Rifle Dragunov” or “ Dragunov’s Sniper Rifle”. They probably didn’t feel the need to write “This is a sniper rifle” on the side of the fucking gun because it was plainly obvious to everyone using it.
2. I also imagine that with communism and the whole “you’re doing this for the good of the state fuck individuals getting all famous and respected for things”, putting any reference to the designer on his invention would have probably seemed in bad taste to them.
Just my theory.

I also just realized that yours is one of the california armory Tigrs. For those ITT who may not know there are actually far fewer of those in the united states than there are NDM-86s (about 700 vs maybe about 1500 .x54r NDM’s - no one really knows for sure).

I actually looked at getting one of these way back when before I went for the NDM so I’m a bit familiar with them. Your version has a few more points of commonality with the military SVD than than the other Tigr versions. It’s also, as I mentioned earlier, far more uncommon than the other tigr variants so from both a shooting and a collecting standpoint I’d say you made the right purchase.
